Biography

Short Description

Andreas Bauer was born on 26 November 1866 in Eigeltingen in the Grand Duchy of Baden, in southwestern Germany. Surviving historical sources provide little information about his family or early years. He entered the Order of Friars Minor as a lay brother, embracing a vocation of prayer, obedience, and manual service rather than priestly ministry. In the Franciscan tradition of the period, such brothers formed an essential part of missionary communities, handling practical labors that allowed priests to focus on sacramental and pastoral work.

In the mid-1890s Bauer was sent to the Franciscan missions in China. He reached Shanxi province, where the Order had long maintained a presence, and was assigned to Taiyuan, the provincial capital. There he lived and worked among a community that included bishops Gregorio Grassi and Francesco Fogolla, other friars, and a group of Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. His duties were those of a brother in a mission station: supporting the daily life of the house and the care of those who came to the mission.

Anti-Christian violence intensified with the Boxer Rebellion. In Shanxi the governor Yuxian proved especially severe. In early July 1900 the missionaries of Taiyuan were summoned to the governor’s residence. On 9 July they were executed. Andreas Bauer died that day with the two bishops, several priests, seven religious sisters, Chinese seminarians, and lay Catholics. Contemporary accounts describe the killings as a public massacre carried out by official order amid the wider Boxer attacks on Christians.

The Holy See later recognized these deaths as martyrdom. Pope Pius XII beatified Andreas Bauer with other victims of the Shanxi persecution on 24 November 1946. On 1 October 2000 Pope John Paul II canonized him among the 120 Martyrs of China, a group whose members suffered between the seventeenth and twentieth centuries. The Church commemorates them on 9 July. Bauer is remembered as a simple Franciscan brother who remained with his community until death.
