Biography

Short Description

Andrei Rublev was a Russian monk and painter of icons and frescoes, active in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries in the lands of Muscovy. He is universally regarded as the foremost master of medieval Russian religious art. Contemporary written sources that mention him are extremely few, and they do not record his parentage, the place or exact year of his birth, or the details of his training. Later tradition and modern scholarship generally place his birth in the 1360s. He first appears in a reliable chronicle notice in 1405, when he is named, together with the Byzantine-trained master Theophanes the Greek and the monk Prokhor of Gorodets, as one of the artists who decorated the Cathedral of the Annunciation in the Moscow Kremlin.

Rublev embraced the monastic life. He is closely associated with the Trinity Monastery founded by St. Sergius of Radonezh, where he lived under Hegumen Nikon, Sergius's successor, and with the Saviour Andronikov Monastery in Moscow, a house founded by a disciple of Sergius. In 1408 he and his fellow monk-painter Daniil Chernyi executed frescoes in the Dormition Cathedral at Vladimir, a commission connected with the grand princely court. Around 1425 to 1427 the two artists are again recorded working together on the iconostasis of the new stone Trinity Cathedral at the Trinity-Sergius Monastery. The celebrated icon of the Trinity, also called the Hospitality of Abraham, painted for that cathedral, is the only panel that can be attributed to Rublev with near certainty as an independent work; it is usually dated to the second or third decade of the fifteenth century. Other icons, including the so-called Zvenigorod Deesis rank, are ascribed to him or his immediate circle on stylistic grounds.

Rublev's surviving works are distinguished by a restrained, luminous palette, balanced and spacious composition, and an atmosphere of quiet contemplation. His figures lack the dramatic intensity of Theophanes the Greek and instead convey a sense of inner harmony and theological clarity that later generations of Russian icon painters took as a canonical ideal. The precise date of his death is not established. Monastic tradition at the Andronikov Monastery, where he spent his last years and was buried, gives 29 January 1430; some liturgical sources commemorate him on 17 October 1428. He was already locally venerated as a holy monk-painter in the centuries after his death.

Formal glorification came only in 1988, when the Local Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, meeting for the millennium of the Baptism of Rus', numbered Andrei Rublev among the saints. The Church keeps his principal feast on 4 July and also remembers him on 29 January and among the synaxes of the saints of Moscow and of Radonezh. In the twentieth century his name became known far beyond Orthodox circles through Andrei Tarkovsky's 1966 film Andrei Rublev, a work of historical imagination rather than strict biography. The Andronikov Monastery in Moscow, which now houses the Andrei Rublev Museum of Old Russian Art, remains the traditional place of his burial.
