Biography

Short Description

Andrew of Phú Yên, known in Vietnamese as Anrê Phú Yên, was born in 1625 in the province of Phú Yên in central Đại Việt, in the southern realm then governed by the Nguyễn lords. Almost nothing independent of later hagiography survives about his infancy, but the Jesuit Alexandre de Rhodes, the principal contemporary witness, recorded that the boy’s mother had become a Christian and that Andrew himself came into close contact with the Jesuit mission in his mid-teens. During de Rhodes’s second stay in Cochinchina, in the early 1640s, Andrew was baptized at about fifteen or sixteen years of age and received the name Andrew. De Rhodes described him as intelligent, recollected, and unusually eager to place himself at the service of the still-fragile Christian communities of the region.

After baptism Andrew entered the group of native catechists that de Rhodes had organized under the name of the House of God. Because ordained priests were few, these lay catechists studied doctrine, lived in a form of community, and went out to instruct villages, prepare catechumens, and hold scattered congregations together. Andrew worked in this capacity in central Vietnam, assisting the Jesuits in teaching and in the pastoral care of converts. The Cochinchinese mission was only a generation old; Portuguese merchants and Jesuit missionaries had opened the field, and the faith remained politically suspect to many mandarins serving the Nguyễn court. Within that setting Andrew acquired a reputation for zeal and composure that made him, while still an adolescent, one of the more trusted Vietnamese helpers of the mission.

In 1644 a persecution broke upon the Christians of the Nguyễn domains. A provincial governor ordered the arrest of catechists and required believers to trample a crucifix as a public sign of apostasy. Andrew was seized, examined, and pressed to recant. He refused both to abandon the faith and to perform the ritual act of contempt toward the cross. De Rhodes’s narrative presents him as answering with calm firmness and as encouraging fellow prisoners. Condemned to death by beheading, he was executed on 26 July 1644 at Kẻ Chàm, an administrative centre in Quảng Nam, at about nineteen years of age. De Rhodes was in the vicinity, observed the martyrdom, and wrote a detailed account of Andrew’s prayers and bearing at the place of execution.

Shortly afterward de Rhodes composed a relation of the event, published in Paris in 1653 as a narrative of the glorious death of Andrew the catechist of Cochinchina. That text made Andrew known in Catholic Europe as the first Vietnamese to die for the Christian faith. Local Christians recovered his remains and treated them as relics; de Rhodes himself took an interest in their preservation. Later Vietnamese Catholic memory therefore honoured him as the protomartyr of Vietnam, a title that retained its force even after the much larger martyrdoms of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. He was a layman, not a member of a religious order, and no contemporary source records a marriage or children.

Andrew was not numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam canonized in 1988, whose deaths belong to those later persecutions. On 5 March 2000 Pope John Paul II beatified him in Rome, accepting the historical solidity of de Rhodes’s testimony and the continuity of his cult. He remains a Blessed of the Catholic Church, with liturgical memorial on 26 July, and is remembered above all as a youthful lay catechist and as the first Vietnamese martyr.
