Biography

Short Description

Andrew Trần Văn Trông, known in Vietnamese Catholic usage as Anrê Trần Văn Trông, was a lay martyr of the nineteenth-century Church in Vietnam and is venerated among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1814 in the village of Kim Long, in the Hương Trà area of Thừa Thiên, near the Nguyễn dynasty capital of Huế in central Vietnam. Catholic communities had existed in this region for generations, often under legal disability. As a young man he served as a soldier in the imperial army, a position that later exposed him to particular scrutiny when the court intensified its campaign against Christianity.

Emperor Minh Mạng, who reigned from 1820 to 1841, regarded Christianity as a heterodox teaching associated with foreign powers and as a threat to Confucian social order. Edicts required Christians to recant, commonly by trampling a crucifix, and imposed imprisonment, torture, and death on those who refused. Trần Văn Trông was identified as a believer, arrested, and subjected to interrogation. Accounts preserved for the later beatification process state that he would not apostatize. Precise records of his military rank, family circumstances, and the exact sequence of his imprisonment are scarce, as is common for many lay victims of these persecutions.

He was executed by beheading on 28 January 1835 at An Hòa, near Huế, at about the age of twenty-one. His death occurred during a concentrated period of anti-Christian violence in Annam in the mid-1830s, which claimed both European and Vietnamese clergy and a larger number of Vietnamese laity. Local Catholic memory retained his name and the circumstances of his martyrdom, which were later submitted to Rome.

The Holy See beatified him on 27 May 1900 under Pope Leo XIII, as part of a large group of Vietnamese martyrs. On 19 June 1988 Pope John Paul II canonized him together with 116 companions—bishops, priests, catechists, and laypeople—who had suffered in Vietnam from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century. The group is inscribed in the General Roman Calendar on 24 November. Individual biographical sources for Trần Văn Trông remain limited to martyrological notices; no extensive contemporary vita survives.
