Short Description

Detailed Narrative

Andrey Yuryevich, known as Andrey Bogolyubsky (Andrew of Bogolyubovo), was a twelfth-century prince of northeastern Rus' and Grand Prince of Vladimir. He was a son of Yuri Dolgorukiy, prince of the Rostov-Suzdal land and later of Kiev, and a grandson of Vladimir Monomakh. Contemporary chronicles do not record a precise year or place of birth; later tradition sometimes gives 1111, but that figure is not securely documented. He grew up and began his career in the northeast, where his father had built a power base away from the older southern centers of Kiev and Chernigov. The epithet Bogolyubsky comes from Bogolyubovo, the fortified residence he established near the confluence of the Nerl and Klyazma rivers, which became his favored seat and the source of his familiar name.

After Yuri Dolgorukiy's death in 1157, Andrey was accepted as prince in Vladimir, Suzdal, and Rostov, though not without resistance from older towns and from rival relatives. He made Vladimir his capital, raising a comparatively new city above the traditional centers of Rostov and Suzdal, and he drove his brothers from the land in order to rule it himself. In 1169 he headed a coalition of princes that captured and sacked Kiev, a blow to the political culture of Rus', which had long treated Kiev as the senior throne. Instead of remaining there, he installed a kinsman on the Kievan seat and returned to Vladimir, a choice that later historians have seen as a decisive shift of political weight toward the northeast. He claimed a form of supremacy over other Rus' princes, but his authority outside Vladimir-Suzdal was frequently contested. A major campaign against Novgorod in 1170 failed; Novgorod's defenders later associated their deliverance with the icon of the Mother of God of the Sign.

Andrey was an energetic patron of church building and of the cult of the Theotokos. He transferred a famous Byzantine icon of the Mother of God from Vyshgorod to Vladimir; that image, later known as the Theotokos of Vladimir, became one of the most venerated icons in the East Slavic world. He commissioned the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir, the Golden Gate of that city, and the Church of the Intercession on the Nerl, among other white-stone churches that defined the Vladimir-Suzdal architectural school. Chroniclers and later hagiographers present him as a pious ruler who sought to create a new religious and political center independent of Kiev. He was married and had several sons, among them Izyaslav, Mstislav, and Yuri Andreyevich, the last of whom later went to Georgia and was for a time the husband of Queen Tamar. The name of Andrey's wife is not firmly established in contemporary sources.

His rule provoked deep opposition among the boyars. On the night of 28–29 June 1174 he was murdered in his palace at Bogolyubovo by a group of conspirators, commonly identified with the Kuchkovichi, a prominent boyar clan. Chronicle accounts describe a violent assault in which the wounded prince tried to resist before he was killed. A period of disorder followed; his brother Vsevolod Yuryevich, known as Vsevolod the Big Nest, eventually consolidated power in Vladimir. Andrey was buried in the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir, the church he had founded. The Russian Orthodox Church venerates him as a right-believing prince. His principal feast is kept on 4 July. Relics associated with him were solemnly uncovered in 1702, confirming a cult that had already existed for centuries in the Vladimir land.
