Biography

Short Description

Andrey Nikolayevich Voskresensky was a priest of the Russian Orthodox Church and is venerated as a hieromartyr among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. He was born in 1884 in the village of Voskresenskoye, in the Zvenigorod district of Moscow Governorate in the Russian Empire, into a family of clergy; his father was a priest. Hereditary clerical families were common in imperial Russia, and surnames such as Voskresensky typically indicated an ancestor’s service at a church of the Resurrection. Andrey received a church education in the theological schools of the Moscow diocese and was ordained to the priesthood, later being elevated to the rank of archpriest (protoiereus), a dignity given to senior married parish priests rather than to monastic clergy.

His ministry coincided with the collapse of the Russian Empire, the revolutions of 1917, the Civil War, and the establishment of Soviet rule. From the first years of Bolshevik power the state conducted a systematic campaign against the Orthodox Church: monasteries were liquidated, church valuables were seized, public religious instruction was banned, and large numbers of bishops and priests were imprisoned or executed. In the 1920s the authorities also promoted the Renovationist schism in an effort to split the Church. Archpriest Andrei belonged to the clergy who remained with the canonical Patriarchal Church. Serving in the Moscow region, he continued liturgical and pastoral work under increasingly severe legal and extra-legal restrictions.

The year 1937 marked the peak of the Great Terror. Operational orders of the NKVD targeted former tsarist officials, kulaks, ethnic minorities, and “churchmen” as categories for arrest and execution. Clergy still at liberty were frequently accused of anti-Soviet agitation or of belonging to fictitious counter-revolutionary organizations. Archpriest Andrei Voskresensky was arrested in that year, condemned by an NKVD troika—an extrajudicial three-person board—and sentenced to death. He was shot at the Butovo firing range on the southern edge of Moscow, a secret police killing field used intensively in 1937–1938. More than twenty thousand people were executed there and buried in mass graves; among the dead were hundreds of Orthodox clergy and laity, later known as the New Martyrs of Butovo.

After the fall of Soviet restrictions on the Church, archival research and local veneration prepared the way for formal glorification. The Jubilee Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church, meeting in August 2000, canonized a great host of New Martyrs and Confessors, including Archpriest Andrei Voskresensky. He is commemorated with that synaxis, kept on the Sunday nearest 25 January, and with the New Martyrs of Butovo, whose memory is observed at the church raised on the former execution site, which has become a major place of pilgrimage. Documentary traces of his life remain limited, as is typical for parish clergy of his generation whose personal papers were lost in the persecutions; the principal facts are those preserved in church records, investigation files, and the martyrologies compiled at the end of the twentieth century.
