Biography

Short Description

Ángel Herrera Oria was a Spanish Catholic journalist, lawyer, and later priest and cardinal, and one of the most influential figures in the Catholic apostolate in Spain in the twentieth century. He was born in Santander in 1886 and trained as a lawyer, studying at the University of Salamanca and at the Jesuit University of Deusto. As a young layman he was drawn into Jesuit-inspired work of Catholic propaganda among professionals. In the first decade of the century he helped to found the Asociación Católica Nacional de Propagandistas, an elite association of Catholic laymen dedicated to spreading Catholic social and political principles through the press, education, and public life rather than through a confessional political party alone.

From 1911 he directed the Madrid newspaper El Debate, which under his leadership became the leading Catholic daily in Spain. Around the paper he built related institutions, including Editorial Católica and later the Centro de Estudios Universitarios (CEU), intended to form a Catholic professional and intellectual elite. He became a principal organizer of Spanish Catholic Action and a prominent interpreter of papal social teaching in the Spanish context, arguing for organized lay action, Catholic education, and social reform. His public activity spanned the late Restoration monarchy, the dictatorship of Miguel Primo de Rivera, and the Second Republic, a period in which Spanish Catholicism confronted accelerating secularization, anticlerical legislation, and deepening political polarization.

After the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War he left Spain and studied theology at Fribourg in Switzerland. He was ordained a priest in 1940, at a relatively advanced age, having spent most of his adult life as a lay leader. In 1947 Pope Pius XII appointed him bishop of Málaga, a see he held for nearly two decades. As bishop he gave particular attention to social questions in Andalusia, promoting education, charitable works, and housing for the poor, and he continued to write and speak on Catholic social doctrine. He took part in the Second Vatican Council as a diocesan bishop. In 1965 Pope Paul VI created him a cardinal. He resigned the diocese of Málaga the following year.

Herrera Oria died in Madrid in 1968. He is remembered as a bridge figure: a lay Catholic publicist of the early twentieth century who later entered the hierarchy, and a representative of social Catholicism whose career ran from the Restoration through republic, civil war, and the Franco period to the eve of post-conciliar change. A cause for his beatification has been introduced in the Catholic Church and he is regarded as a Servant of God, but he has not been beatified or canonized, and he has no established feast day or official patronages.
