Biography

Short Description

Ángel Riesco Carbajo was born on 9 July 1902 in Bercianos de Vidriales, a small agricultural village in the province of Zamora, in the historical region of Castile and León in northwestern Spain. He came from a modest rural household and grew up in a parish-centered countryside that still structured daily life at the beginning of the twentieth century. Sensing a vocation to the diocesan priesthood, he entered the seminary of the Diocese of Astorga, which served much of the León-Zamora area, and received the philosophical and theological formation then customary for secular clergy. He was ordained a priest in 1926 and began ministry in a Spain that would soon pass through the Second Republic and the Civil War. His own path remained that of a parish priest rather than a public or political figure.

As a priest of Astorga he served in pastoral assignments in the diocese, including work associated with La Bañeza and other communities of the region. He devoted himself to the sacraments, preaching, catechesis, and the accompaniment of families, laborers, and the rural poor. Those who later advanced his cause remembered an unadorned manner of life and a desire to make the Church present among people who might otherwise have been neglected. In the middle decades of the century he gathered women willing to live a consecrated life in the world, without traditional religious enclosure, in order to carry out charity and evangelization. From this effort came the Misioneras Apostólicas de la Caridad (Missionary Apostles of Charity), a secular institute whose members joined prayer to direct service of those in need. Riesco Carbajo acted as founder and spiritual guide, giving the community an apostolic orientation rooted in charity and closeness to the marginalized.

On 15 February 1958 Pope Pius XII appointed him titular bishop of Limisa and auxiliary bishop of Pamplona, and he received episcopal consecration the same year. He thus moved from Astorga to the Archdiocese of Pamplona in Navarre, assisting the ordinary in governance and pastoral care. His episcopate coincided with the pontificate of John XXIII and the opening of the Second Vatican Council. As a member of the Catholic episcopate he took part in the Council (1962-1965), placing a Spanish auxiliary of relatively quiet demeanor within the principal reform assembly of the modern Latin Church. He continued to support the institute he had founded while fulfilling an auxiliary’s duties of confirmation, visitation, and diocesan collaboration. In 1969, his health having declined, he resigned as auxiliary bishop and retired to La Bañeza, returning to the setting of his earlier priesthood and to the Misioneras Apostólicas de la Caridad.

Riesco Carbajo died in La Bañeza on 2 July 1972, a few days before his seventieth birthday. He was remembered locally as a bishop who had not sought prominence and as a founder who tried to embody evangelical simplicity and pastoral charity. In the decades after his death, the institute he established and members of the faithful in León and Navarre preserved his memory and promoted a cause for beatification. The Holy See examined his life and writings; Pope Francis recognized that he had practiced the Christian virtues to a heroic degree, and he was subsequently beatified. His figure belongs to the twentieth-century Spanish episcopate: a diocesan priest from a rural Castilian background who became an auxiliary bishop, a Council Father, and the founder of a secular institute dedicated to charity, and who is honored in the Catholic Church for holiness of life rather than for political or academic celebrity.
