Biography

Short Description

Maria Angela Autsch was born on 26 March 1900 in the village of Röllecken in the Sauerland of Westphalia, then in the German Empire (today part of Attendorn). She was raised in a Catholic family of modest means and, after her schooling, worked for years as a sales clerk in shops in the Attendorn area. Those who knew her in civilian life later described her as industrious, good-humored, and openly devout. In 1933 she left secular employment to enter the convent of the Trinitarian Sisters at Mötz in the Austrian Tyrol. She received the religious name Sister Angela Maria of the Heart of Jesus and made profession in the Order of the Most Holy Trinity, a community historically devoted to the redemption of captives and to works of mercy.

After the Anschluss of Austria in 1938, religious houses came under growing National Socialist pressure. Sister Angela did not hide her rejection of the regime. In August 1940 she was denounced and arrested by the Gestapo in Innsbruck after remarks critical of Adolf Hitler (accounts speak of her refusing the Hitler salute or speaking against the Führer). She was held in local prisons and then deported to the Ravensbrück concentration camp for women. Assigned to forced labor, she became known among fellow prisoners for sharing scarce food, encouraging prayer, and trying to keep up morale under camp discipline.

In 1942 she was transferred to Auschwitz. There she was put to work in kitchen and infirmary-related service attached to SS facilities, positions that gave her limited chances to obtain extra food and small medical supplies, which she passed to other inmates. Survivors later testified that prisoners called her the “Angel of Auschwitz” because of her steadiness, her care for the sick and despairing—including Jewish prisoners—and her refusal to be spiritually broken by the camp. She remained a professed Trinitarian sister throughout her imprisonment and never married or had children.

Sister Angela Maria Autsch died at Auschwitz on 23 December 1944. Reports of the immediate cause are not fully consistent: some describe fatal injury or collapse during an Allied air raid on industrial installations near the camp; others emphasize illness and exhaustion after years of deprivation. Her remains were not given a conventional Christian burial. After the war, survivor testimony prompted a cause for beatification in the Diocese of Innsbruck; she has been treated as a Servant of God but has not been beatified or canonized, and she has no universally established feast day or official patronages. She is remembered especially among Trinitarians and in Westphalia and Tyrol as a witness of charity under persecution.
