Biography

Short Description

Angela Merici was born in 1474 at Desenzano del Garda, on the southern shore of Lake Garda in the Republic of Venice. She belonged to a pious family of the local countryside. While still young she was orphaned and went to live with an uncle in the nearby town of Salò. The sudden death of her sister, who died without receiving the last sacraments, caused her lasting sorrow. Traditional accounts relate that she received a vision in which her sister appeared among the saints, an experience that confirmed her in a life of prayer. She entered the Third Order of Saint Francis and thereafter lived as a consecrated woman in the world, combining fasting, contemplation, and works of mercy.

She later returned to Desenzano and made her house a centre of Christian instruction for girls, teaching them the catechism at a time when such education for young women was uncommon. In the 1510s she settled in Brescia, a prosperous city on the Venetian terraferma. There she became known for spiritual counsel and for gathering women in works of charity and formation. In 1524 she joined a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Early biographers record that she lost her sight on the island of Crete yet continued to the holy places, and that her vision was restored at the same spot on the homeward journey. In 1525 she went to Rome for the Jubilee. Pope Clement VII reportedly wished her to remain in the city to serve its hospitals and charitable houses, but she returned to Brescia, convinced that her vocation lay there.

On 25 November 1535 Angela and twenty-eight companions founded in Brescia the Company of Saint Ursula, named for the legendary virgin martyr. The Company was conceived as a new form of consecrated life: its members remained in their family homes, wore ordinary dress, and did not take public solemn vows, yet they promised virginity and dedicated themselves to the Christian education of girls. Angela wrote a Rule together with Counsels and a Testament that stressed interior recollection, mutual charity, and the careful formation of young women in faith and morals. She served as the first superior of the Company. After her death the Ursulines gradually adopted a more conventual structure and became a major teaching order of women, spreading through Catholic Europe and later overseas.

Angela Merici died in Brescia on 27 January 1540 and was buried in the church of Saint Afra. Her remains were later described as incorrupt, and a cult developed around her tomb as the Ursuline institute grew. She was beatified by Pope Clement XIII in 1768 and canonized by Pope Pius VII in 1807. The Church keeps her feast on 27 January. She is honoured as patron of people with disabilities, of the sick, of those who have lost their parents, and of educators, and she is the foundress and patron of the Ursuline sisters. Her foundation is historically significant as an early model of apostolic consecrated life for women living in the midst of society rather than in enclosure.
