Biography

Short Description

Angelo da Foligno, known in secular life as Angelo Conti, was born in 1226 in Foligno in Umbria to a family of the local nobility. In the mid-thirteenth century he entered the hermits who followed the Rule of Saint Augustine, a movement then gathering strength in central Italy and formally united into the Order of Hermits of Saint Augustine by Pope Alexander IV in 1256. Ordained a priest, he embraced a life of austerity, prayer, and apostolic work. He is traditionally credited with founding the Augustinian convent of Sant'Agostino in his native Foligno, thereby establishing a lasting house of the order in that city.

As a preacher and spiritual guide he gained a reputation for holiness and for the conversion of those who heard him. Later accounts emphasize his humility, his care for the poor and the sick, and his fidelity to the Augustinian rule. He lived through a period of significant growth for his order in Umbria and contributed to its pastoral work among the urban population. Little survives in the way of writings of his own, and the details of his career are known chiefly through later hagiographical tradition preserved by the Augustinians and by local memory in Foligno.

Angelo died in Foligno on 27 January 1312 and was buried in the church of Sant'Agostino associated with his foundation. Veneration at his tomb began soon after his death, and a local cult developed that endured through the later Middle Ages. In 1881 Pope Leo XIII confirmed this longstanding cult, thereby recognizing him as Blessed. His liturgical memorial is kept on 27 January, especially within the Augustinian Order and in the diocese of Foligno.

The historical sources for his biography remain limited, as is common for many locally venerated medieval figures. Later Augustinian chroniclers preserved the outline of his noble origin, his role in the Foligno foundation, and the date of his death. Modern scholarship accepts the main lines of this tradition while noting that precise details of his early years and the exact chronology of his entry into religious life are not independently documented in thirteenth-century archival records. The consistency of the hagiographical tradition, the existence of his tomb and cult in Foligno, and the papal confirmation of 1881 nevertheless provide a reasonably secure historical core for his identity as a thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century Augustinian friar of Umbria.
