Biography

Short Description

Angelo da Gualdo Tadino was a Benedictine monk and hermit of Umbria, born in the later thirteenth century in the hill town of Gualdo Tadino, then in the Papal States of central Italy. Later tradition assigns his birth to about 1265, but that year is conventional rather than documentary; no contemporary baptismal, notarial, or monastic record of his birth has been identified. Almost nothing securely attested survives about his family or childhood. According to the early modern notices that later supported his cult, he entered the Benedictine monastery of San Benedetto on the slopes of Monte Serrasanta above Gualdo Tadino and lived there under the Rule of Saint Benedict. The house was a local Umbrian community, not a great international abbey, and his formation would have been that of an ordinary monk in a modest cloister of the period.

After a time of cenobitic life he obtained permission to live as a hermit, a vocation well attested among medieval Benedictines who sought stricter solitude. He withdrew to a cell or hermitage in the countryside near his native town and spent the remainder of his life in prayer, fasting, and austerity. Later hagiography portrays him as a counsellor of the townspeople and a wonder-worker, but those miracle stories belong to the cult that grew after his death and cannot be verified from thirteenth- or fourteenth-century documents. No rule of life written by him, no contemporary vita, and no papal letter from his lifetime are known. The outline of monk, hermit, and local holy man is consistent across the notices used in the nineteenth century, yet dates of profession, the precise site of his hermitage, and the names of abbots or bishops who knew him are not securely attested.

He died at Gualdo Tadino on 15 January 1325 (some older notices give 1324, a discrepancy that may reflect differing medieval year-reckonings). He was buried locally, and a popular cult arose in the town. Veneration remained essentially civic and diocesan for centuries. On 3 August 1825 Pope Leo XII confirmed the immemorial cult, an act then equivalent to beatification. Angelo was not subsequently canonized and is therefore styled Blessed in official Catholic usage, though locally he is often called santo. His liturgical memorial is 15 January. He is honoured as a patron of Gualdo Tadino together with Saint Michael the Archangel, the town's principal patron, and his memory remains part of the religious identity of the town and of the present diocese of Assisi-Nocera Umbra-Gualdo Tadino.

The historical record is thin even by the standards of late-medieval Italian beati. Angelo's importance lies less in a recoverable personal biography than in the continuity of civic devotion at Gualdo Tadino, where feast, images, and relics associated with him have marked the religious calendar from the later Middle Ages through the confirmation of 1825 and into modern parish life. Claims beyond this outline—detailed miracle cycles, exact family origin, or a Camaldolese rather than ordinary Benedictine affiliation—rest on later tradition and should be treated with caution.
