Biography

Short Description

Angelo Francesco Ramazzotti was born on 3 August 1800 in Milan, then the principal city of the Cisalpine Republic. He came from a Milanese family of comfortable standing and grew up through the Napoleonic years and the Austrian restoration in Lombardy. After preparatory studies he entered the seminary of the Archdiocese of Milan and was ordained a priest for that archdiocese. For about two decades he served in pastoral ministry in the Milanese church, where he gained a reputation for personal piety, care for the poor, and a growing interest in the missionary work of the Catholic Church beyond Europe.

In 1850 he founded in Milan the Lombard Seminary for Foreign Missions, a community of secular priests dedicated to overseas evangelization. Established with the support of the Archbishop of Milan, the seminary later developed into the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), which became one of the chief Italian missionary institutes of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. That same year Pope Pius IX appointed him Bishop of Pavia. He governed Pavia from 1850 until 1858, conducting pastoral visitations and promoting clerical formation, catechesis, and works of charity, while remaining closely associated with the missionary foundation he had begun in Milan.

In 1858 he was named Patriarch of Venice, a historic Latin see then still located in Austrian-ruled Venetia. As patriarch he was known for austere personal habits, concern for the needy, and a firm defense of the Church’s pastoral freedom during the political upheavals surrounding Italian unification. He belonged to the secular clergy rather than to a religious order, and he was never created a cardinal. Ramazzotti died on 24 September 1861 at the age of sixty-one.

He continued to be remembered after death, especially among the missionaries of PIME and in the dioceses he had served. A cause for beatification was introduced and he was given the title Servant of God. On 5 June 2015 Pope Francis confirmed a decree of heroic virtues, declaring him Venerable. He has not been beatified or canonized and has no universally assigned feast day or official patronages. His principal historical legacy is the Milan missionary seminary of 1850 that became PIME, together with his service as a residential bishop in Lombardy and the Veneto in the mid-nineteenth century.
