Biography

Short Description

Angelo Tancredi, also known as Angelo of Rieti or Brother Angelo, was a thirteenth-century Italian Franciscan friar and one of the earliest companions of Saint Francis of Assisi. He came from a noble family of Rieti in the Sabina region of central Italy, then within the Papal States. Surviving sources do not record the year of his birth. Before he entered religious life he had been a knight, a fact that early Franciscan narratives repeatedly underline. According to those legends, Francis encountered the knight and called him to the evangelical life, addressing him with the courtesy due to a nobleman. The gesture is presented as both affectionate and pointed: knighthood was henceforth to be exercised in the company of the “knights of Christ” rather than in arms. Tancredi took the habit of the Friars Minor in the first years of the movement, and later tradition numbered him among the first twelve brothers.

He belonged to the inner circle that lived with Francis in the poor dwellings at the Portiuncula and accompanied him on preaching journeys through Umbria and neighboring districts. Together with Brothers Leo and Rufino he formed the group later called the Three Companions. These three men were among those closest to Francis in his last years; they attended him in illness and were associated with the period surrounding his death at the Portiuncula in 1226. Early biographers portray Angelo as retaining something of his knightly bearing even in the Franciscan habit, and as a man of loyalty and discretion rather than as a public controversialist or independent author. His importance in the sources is that of a witness who had seen the founder at close range.

After Francis’s death Angelo remained a living authority on the founder’s life and intentions. In 1246 he, Leo, and Rufino sent a letter from Greccio to Crescentius of Jesi, then minister general of the order, enclosing memories and notes about Francis. That dossier became a principal source for the so-called Legend of the Three Companions and, more broadly, for the companions’ tradition that fed later Franciscan hagiography, including material drawn upon by Thomas of Celano and by Saint Bonaventure. Modern historians treat thirteenth-century legendaries with caution, but they agree that Angelo was a real and well-placed informant whose recollections helped shape how the order remembered its origins.

Angelo Tancredi died at Assisi in 1258. He was not the subject of a formal papal canonization or beatification, and he has no universally observed feast day in the General Roman Calendar. His memory is preserved chiefly within Franciscan tradition as one of the first brothers and as a guardian of the primitive stories about Francis. Precise details of his burial are not firmly established in the sources. His historical standing rests less on an independent cult or reported miracles than on his role as companion, eyewitness, and transmitter of early Franciscan memory.
