Biography

Short Description

Angilbert was a prominent Frankish nobleman, poet, and churchman of the late eighth and early ninth centuries, closely associated with the court of Charlemagne. Of aristocratic Frankish origin, he received his education among the scholars of the Carolingian palace school, where he studied under Alcuin of York and became one of the leading figures of the so-called palatine academy. In that learned circle he was given the nickname Homerus in recognition of his Latin verse. He enjoyed the personal friendship and confidence of Charlemagne and served the king as a counsellor and as an envoy on several important diplomatic missions, including journeys to Rome in connection with papal affairs and the conveyance of a portion of the Avar treasure to Pope Leo III around 796. His exact place and year of birth are not recorded in surviving sources.

Sometime in the later eighth century Charlemagne entrusted Angilbert with the great abbey of Centula, later known as Saint-Riquier, in Ponthieu in northern Francia. There Angilbert undertook an ambitious rebuilding of the monastic complex. The new church was among the most impressive architectural and liturgical centres of the Carolingian Renaissance; contemporary descriptions speak of multiple altars, rich furnishings, and a community of some three hundred monks whose round-the-clock psalmody was organized with unusual splendour. Angilbert himself composed verse celebrating the abbey and its ceremonies, and he appears to have taken an active part in shaping its liturgical life even while remaining a figure of the royal court. Saint-Riquier followed the Benedictine tradition, and Angilbert is remembered as its abbot, though Carolingian abbacies of this kind often combined court service with monastic patronage.

At court Angilbert formed a lasting relationship with Bertha, also called Bertrada, a daughter of Charlemagne and Queen Hildegard. Because the emperor declined to allow his daughters to contract formal marriages, the union was not a canonical marriage, yet it was openly acknowledged and produced at least two sons: Nithard, who became a notable historian and lay abbot and who died in 844, and Hartnid. Nithard's own writings confirm his parentage. In later hagiographical tradition the relationship was sometimes softened or omitted, but it is well attested in ninth-century sources and is an important fact of Carolingian court history rather than a pious legend.

Angilbert's surviving literary work consists chiefly of Latin poems, including a piece that vividly describes life at Charlemagne's court and another that commemorates the abbey of Saint-Riquier. He outlived his patron by only a few weeks: Charlemagne died in January 814, and Angilbert died on 18 February of the same year, traditionally at Saint-Riquier, where he was buried. A local cult developed around him, and he has been venerated as a saint, with a feast day on 18 February. He belongs to the large number of early medieval holy men whose cult arose by popular acclaim rather than by a formal process of canonization. Precise details of his early life remain unknown, and much of his inner biography must be inferred from the courtly and monastic settings in which he moved.
