Biography

Short Description

Angilram, also known as Angilramnus, Engilram, or Engelram, was a Frankish churchman of the later eighth century who held the bishopric of Metz from 768 until his death in 791. He succeeded Chrodegang of Metz, the influential bishop who had given the cathedral clergy a written rule and had been a leading figure in the Frankish church under King Pippin III. Almost nothing reliable is known of Angilram’s family, birthplace, or career before his elevation. He enters the record as bishop of a see that was both a major urban church of Austrasia and a spiritual home of the Carolingian dynasty, whose ancestor Saint Arnulf had occupied the same cathedra in the seventh century. The interval between Chrodegang’s death in 766 and Angilram’s accession in 768 is itself poorly documented.

In the 780s Angilram became one of Charlemagne’s closest ecclesiastical collaborators. About 784 the king named him archchaplain of the palace, head of the royal chapel, in succession to Fulrad of Saint-Denis. In the same period Pope Adrian I granted him the pallium, a distinction normally reserved to metropolitans. The grant was personal and tied to the archchaplaincy; it did not permanently raise Metz to archiepiscopal rank. Wearing the pallium, Angilram combined government of his diocese with attendance on the itinerant court and ranked among the senior prelates of the Carolingian realm. His dual role placed Metz’s resources and prestige at the service of the king’s chapel and of royal ecclesiastical policy.

Angilram is also important as a patron of letters. He asked the Lombard deacon and historian Paul the Deacon, then living in Francia after years at Charlemagne’s court, to write a history of the bishops of Metz. The resulting Gesta episcoporum Mettensium, composed around 783–784 and dedicated to Angilram, surveys the see from its legendary foundation by a disciple of Saint Peter down through Arnulf and the recent bishops. The work served both local memory and dynastic ideology, presenting Metz as an apostolic church closely bound to the ruling house. It remains a principal narrative source for the early medieval bishopric and for the way Carolingian elites wished that church to be remembered.

Angilram died in 791 while accompanying Charlemagne on the expedition against the Avars in the middle Danube region. Contemporary annals describe the campaign of that year; later notices place the bishop’s death in the course of it, away from his cathedral city. After his death the see of Metz remained vacant for many years, a vacancy often associated with royal control of episcopal revenues. No contemporary evidence securely records a cult, a feast day, or the precise place of his burial. His historical reputation rests on his long tenure at Metz, his service as archchaplain, and the historical work he commissioned from Paul the Deacon.
