Biography

Angiolo Agostino Mazzinghi, commonly known in English-language sources as Angelo Agostini Mazzinghi, was born in Florence in 1385. He belonged to the Mazzinghi family of that city. In the opening decades of the fifteenth century he entered the Carmelite Order at the convent of Santa Maria del Carmine in Florence. There he completed his novitiate, made religious profession, and was ordained a priest. His entry into religious life occurred at a moment when a current of reform, seeking a more rigorous observance of the Carmelite rule, was taking root among the friars of Tuscany.

Mazzinghi became closely identified with the observant community at the convent of Santa Maria delle Selve, or Le Selve, in the countryside near Florence. He is traditionally regarded as the first member of that reformed house. He distinguished himself as a preacher and was known in Florence and in other parts of Italy for his sermons. He also served his order in positions of governance, acting as prior of Carmelite convents, among them the principal Florentine house of Santa Maria del Carmine. Carmelite tradition portrays him as a humble religious, devoted to prayer and to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whose order he had joined.

On 17 August 1438 Mazzinghi died in Florence. He was buried in the church of Santa Maria del Carmine, where his tomb became a focus of local veneration. Devotion to him persisted among the Carmelites and the faithful of Florence through the following centuries. In 1761 Pope Clement XIII confirmed this longstanding cultus, thereby beatifying him according to the norms then applied to figures of immemorial popular devotion. He was never canonized and is therefore styled Blessed rather than Saint.

Blessed Angiolo Agostino Mazzinghi is commemorated liturgically on 17 August, the anniversary of his death. His cult remains primarily a Carmelite and Florentine devotion. Historical sources for his life are relatively sparse, consisting largely of later notices preserved by his religious order rather than of extensive contemporary records. He lived and died as a simple priest and friar, without episcopal rank. As a professed Carmelite he was bound to celibacy and is not recorded as having married or as having had children. His biography, though modest in the surviving details, illustrates the observant Carmelite life of early fifteenth-century Tuscany, combining community observance, Marian piety, and the ministry of preaching.
