Biography

Short Description

Anita Cantieri was born on 30 March 1910 in Lucca, Tuscany, in the Kingdom of Italy. She belonged to a Catholic family and grew up in the religious and social environment of early twentieth-century Tuscany. Little is recorded in widely available sources about the details of her childhood or the names of her parents, which is consistent with her later life of hidden rather than public witness. From her youth she cultivated a life of prayer and participation in the sacramental life of the Church.

As a young woman she discerned a vocation to consecrated life lived in the world rather than in a traditional cloistered or conventual setting. She became a member of the Secular Institute of the Missionaries of the Kingship of Christ (Missionarie della Regalità di Cristo), an institute of consecrated life inspired by Franciscan spirituality and associated with the work of the Franciscan friar Agostino Gemelli. Members professed the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience while remaining in their ordinary professional and social circumstances, seeking to make the kingship of Christ present in secular society. Cantieri lived this vocation through work, apostolic activity, and a deepening interior life centered on the Eucharist and the Passion.

In the final years of her life she was stricken with tuberculosis, then a common and frequently fatal illness. She accepted her suffering in a spirit of faith, uniting it to the Passion of Christ and offering it for the needs of the Church. Those who knew her in her last illness testified to her patience, charity, and abandonment to the will of God. She died in Lucca on 24 August 1942 at the age of thirty-two.

A reputation for holiness developed after her death among Catholics in her region. The diocesan process for her cause of beatification was undertaken, and on 21 December 1992 Pope John Paul II approved the decree on her heroic virtues, granting her the title of Venerable. She has not subsequently been beatified or canonized, and she has no universally assigned feast day or widely recognized patronages. Her memory is preserved chiefly in Italian hagiographical literature as an example of lay consecration and redemptive suffering in the twentieth century.
