Biography

Short Description

Anna Kaworek was a Polish Roman Catholic religious sister born on 18 June 1872 in Biedrzychowice (today Biedrzychowice Dolne) in Upper Silesia, then part of the German Empire. She came from a Polish Catholic family and grew up in the rural piety typical of late-nineteenth-century Silesian village life. Widely available historical sources preserve few detailed anecdotes of her childhood, but they agree that she showed an early inclination toward religious life and practical charity. Ethnically Polish in a borderland under Prussian administration, she later identified fully with the reconstituted Polish Catholic milieu in which her congregation took root.

As an adult she became closely associated with the apostolate of Father Bronisław Markiewicz (1842–1912), a priest formed in part by the Salesians of Don Bosco who devoted himself to poor and neglected youth after returning to Polish lands. Markiewicz founded the male Congregation of Saint Michael the Archangel (the Michaelites). Women who wished to share that charism gathered around his work; among them Kaworek emerged as the principal collaborator and is recognized as co-foundress of the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Michael the Archangel (known in Polish as the michalitki). The sisters undertook education, care of orphans, and other works for the poor, in keeping with Michaelite spirituality centered on the Archangel Michael and service to the abandoned.

After Markiewicz’s death in 1912, Kaworek continued to hold together and organize the still-developing community of sisters through the First World War and the restoration of the Polish state. She served as the first superior general once the institute obtained a more stable canonical form in the interwar years. The motherhouse was established at Miejsce Piastowe in the Subcarpathian region, which became the center of the congregation’s life. Accounts from within the Michaelite family stress her perseverance, practicality, and fidelity to the founding inspiration rather than a large corpus of writings.

Kaworek died at Miejsce Piastowe on 30 December 1936 and was buried there. She has not been beatified or canonized by the Catholic Church; her memory is kept mainly within the Michaelite religious family and in local Polish Catholic historiography as a co-foundress who gave lasting shape to a congregation dedicated to youth and the poor under the successive conditions of the German Empire, wartime disruption, and the Second Polish Republic.
