Biography

Short Description

Anna Ivanovna Makandina was a Russian Orthodox novice and martyr of the Soviet period, numbered among the New Martyrs and Confessors of Russia. She was born in 1889 in the village of Saurovo in Bogorodsky Uyezd of Moscow Governorate, in a peasant family of the late Russian Empire. Surviving records of her childhood, education, and immediate family are extremely sparse, as is typical for many rural believers whose lives were later reconstructed almost entirely from NKVD investigation files rather than from church chronicles or personal writings. She grew up in a still-traditional Orthodox milieu that would be shattered by the Revolution of 1917 and the subsequent state campaign against religion.

In adult life Makandina embraced a monastic path as a poslushnitsa (novice) connected with church communities in the Moscow region after the closure or severe restriction of many convents. She continued to live as a practicing Orthodox Christian in Moscow itself during the 1920s and 1930s, a time when public religious observance, association with clergy, and even private piety could be treated as political crimes. The Soviet authorities regarded active believers, especially those with monastic ties, as remnants of the old order and potential centers of “counter-revolutionary” influence.

During the Great Terror she was arrested by the NKVD on 22 February 1938. She was charged with anti-Soviet agitation linked to her religious life. A troika of the NKVD Directorate for Moscow Oblast sentenced her to death on 7 March 1938. On 14 March 1938 she was shot at the Butovo firing range south of Moscow, one of the principal sites of mass extrajudicial executions, where more than twenty thousand people—including large numbers of Orthodox clergy, monastics, and laypeople—were killed and interred in unmarked common graves.

Anna Makandina was glorified as a prepodobnomuchenitsa (venerable martyr) by the Jubilee Bishops’ Council of the Russian Orthodox Church in August 2000, as part of the general canonization of the New Martyrs and Confessors who suffered under Communist rule. Her earthly remains lie in the mass graves at Butovo, which has become a major place of pilgrimage; a memorial church now stands at the site. Because so little personal testimony survived, her official life is brief and cautious, resting on archival dates, place names, and the fact of her execution for the faith rather than on extended hagiographical anecdote.
