Biography

Short Description

Anna Maria Antigó i Pujol was born on 19 January 1602 in Perpignan, then the capital of the County of Roussillon within the Principality of Catalonia and the Crown of Aragon under the Spanish Habsburgs. She was the daughter of the merchant Joan Antigó and Elisabet Pujol and was raised in a Catholic household of comfortable means during the Catholic Reformation. In 1618, at about sixteen years of age, she entered the enclosed Monastery of Santa Clara in her native city, a community of the Order of Saint Clare (Poor Clares), and spent the remainder of her life there in poverty, enclosure, and liturgical prayer.

Over nearly six decades in religion she gained a reputation for austerity, mystical prayer, and practical judgment. Her sisters elected her abbess on four occasions in the mid- and later seventeenth century, so that she governed the house through years of war, epidemic, and political change. As abbess she insisted on regular Franciscan-Clarian observance. The decisive public event of her lifetime was the cession of Roussillon to France by the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659. Thereafter French royal policy sought linguistic and administrative assimilation of the newly acquired territory. Antigó worked to preserve the Catalan character of her monastery, including the use of Catalan in community life and correspondence.

She is credited with spiritual letters and other writings that circulated in manuscript among religious houses; together with the convent’s records, these form the main sources for her biography. She died in the Monastery of Santa Clara in Perpignan on 28 September 1676. She has never been formally beatified or canonized by the Holy See and has no official feast in the Roman calendar, but Catalan religious and cultural historiography has remembered her as an exemplar of Poor Clare life and as a witness to Roussillon’s Catalan identity after annexation by France.
