Biography

Short Description

Anna Porphyrogenita was a Byzantine imperial princess of the Macedonian dynasty, born in Constantinople in 963 to Emperor Romanos II and Empress Theophano. Because she was born in the Purple Chamber of the Great Palace while her father still occupied the throne, she received the designation Porphyrogenita, a mark of the highest dynastic rank in Byzantine political culture. She was the younger sister of Basil II and Constantine VIII, both of whom later ruled as emperors. Romanos II died in March 963, when she was an infant. Theophano then married the general Nikephoros Phokas, who took the throne as Nikephoros II; after his murder in 969, John I Tzimiskes became emperor and Theophano was sent into exile. Anna was raised at the imperial court during her brothers' minority and subsequent independent rule, in a period of Balkan and eastern warfare and of efforts by the Macedonian house to reassert legitimacy after a succession of soldier-emperors.

The central event of her life was her marriage to Vladimir Sviatoslavich, Grand Prince of Kiev, in 988 or 989. Porphyrogenita princesses were almost never given to rulers whom Constantinople regarded as barbarians, and the match was accepted only under military and diplomatic pressure. Vladimir had seized the Byzantine city of Chersonesos in the Crimea and offered to restore it in exchange for Anna's hand, while also agreeing to accept baptism. At the same time Basil II faced the rebellion of Bardas Phokas and needed troops; Vladimir supplied a large Varangian force that helped defeat the revolt. The emperors then consented to the marriage. Contemporary and later accounts indicate that Anna was reluctant to leave Constantinople, but the alliance was concluded. Vladimir was baptized, traditionally at Chersonesos or at Kiev, and the wedding most likely took place at Chersonesos, after which the city was returned to Byzantine control.

Anna then went to Kiev as grand princess. The Russian Primary Chronicle and the chronicle of Thietmar of Merseburg associate her arrival with the official Christianization of Kievan Rus'. Byzantine clergy, books, relics, and artisans accompanied or followed her. The stone Church of the Tithes in Kiev, dedicated to the Dormition of the Theotokos, was built in this period with Byzantine assistance and became an early center of the new church. Her presence gave the conversion a dynastic and ceremonial character and bound the Rurikid house to the Macedonian dynasty. Reliable sources say little about her later years at the Kievan court; Byzantine and Latin writers mention her mainly in connection with the marriage and her imperial origin, while Rus' sources emphasize the conversion more than her personal activities.

Anna died in 1011, according to Thietmar of Merseburg, who recorded the death of Vladimir's wife, the sister of the Byzantine emperors. She therefore predeceased Vladimir, who died in 1015. Whether the couple had children is not securely documented. Later genealogies have sometimes assigned offspring to them, but these claims are not firmly supported by early evidence, and several of Vladimir's known sons are attributed to other wives. Anna's historical importance lies in the diplomatic and religious consequences of the marriage. The union of a porphyrogenita with the ruler of Kiev was unprecedented in Byzantine practice and helped orient Kievan Rus' toward Byzantine Christianity, law, art, and political ideology, a connection that shaped the religious and cultural history of the Eastern Slavs for centuries.
