Biography

Short Description

Anne Catherine Emmerich, known in German as Anna Katharina Emmerick, was born on 8 September 1774 in Flamschen, a farming hamlet near Coesfeld in Westphalia, then within the Prince-Bishopric of Münster in the Holy Roman Empire. She was the fifth of nine children of a poor Catholic peasant family. She received only rudimentary schooling and from early childhood was noted for intense piety, reported visions of Christ and the saints, and a desire for religious life. Poverty delayed her vocation: for years she worked as a farmhand and later as a seamstress while seeking admission to a convent.

In 1802 she entered the convent of Augustinian canonesses at Agnetenberg in Dülmen. Her years in community were marked by fragile health, austerity, and a reputation for holiness. The convent was suppressed in 1811 during the secularization of ecclesiastical property in the Napoleonic period and under subsequent Prussian administration, and the nuns were dispersed. Emmerich remained in Dülmen. From about 1813 she was almost continuously bedridden. Around Christmas 1812 she manifested the stigmata—wounds corresponding to those of Christ’s Passion—together with other reported phenomena such as prolonged fasting and ecstatic states. These drew pilgrims, skeptics, and official scrutiny. Church authorities and a Prussian civil commission in 1819 examined her; the inquiries did not establish fraud, but they also did not constitute a formal authentication of supernatural origin.

From 1818 until her death the Romantic poet Clemens Brentano lived in Dülmen and recorded extensive accounts of her visions, including scenes from the life of Jesus, the Virgin Mary, and various saints, as well as descriptions of the Holy Land. After her death Brentano prepared these notes for publication; the best-known volume is The Dolorous Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Later textual criticism has shown that Brentano freely rearranged, amplified, and in many passages invented material, so the printed books cannot be treated as a reliable transcript of Emmerich’s own words. When the Holy See later beatified her, it made clear that the cause concerned her life of Christian virtue and not the authenticity of the Brentano compilations.

Emmerich died in Dülmen on 9 February 1824 and was buried in the town cemetery. In the twentieth century her remains were transferred to the Church of the Holy Cross (Heilig-Kreuz-Kirche) in Dülmen, where they remain. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 3 October 2004. Her liturgical memorial is observed on 9 February. She is remembered as a suffering mystic of the early nineteenth-century German Catholic revival, while serious historical work distinguishes her documented life from the later literary corpus that circulated under her name.
