Biography

Short Description

Anne de Novgorod, known in Swedish as Ingegerd Olofsdotter and in the Orthodox tradition as Saint Anna (also called Irina or Irene), was a princess of Sweden in the early eleventh century who became Grand Princess of Kievan Rus' by marriage. She was the daughter of Olof Skötkonung, the first Christian king of Sweden, and is generally identified as the child of his queen Estrid of the Obotrites. Her birth date is not recorded in contemporary documents and is only estimated by later historians to the beginning of the eleventh century. She was raised in a newly Christianizing Swedish court that maintained close contacts with both the Norse world and the Slavic principalities to the east.

In the 1010s, marriage diplomacy connected her to the rulers of Rus'. Norse sagas relate that she had been intended as a bride for Olaf II of Norway, but that alliance was abandoned. Instead, around 1019, she married Yaroslav, son of Vladimir the Great. Yaroslav was then established at Novgorod and soon after became Grand Prince of Kiev. The marriage is among the better-attested dynastic unions of the period, appearing in both Scandinavian narrative sources and the Russian chronicles. As her morning-gift or dowry arrangement, Ingegerd received the town of Aldeigjuborg (Staraya Ladoga) and its district, which was placed under the governance of the Swedish jarl Ragnvald Ulfsson. In Rus' she was known by the Christian name Irina (Irene). During Yaroslav's long reign she occupied the position of grand princess at a time when Kiev was a major political and ecclesiastical center, and later tradition associates her with church patronage, including the milieu in which the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Kiev was built.

Yaroslav and Ingegerd had a large family whose marriages extended Kievan influence across Europe. Their sons included Vladimir of Novgorod, Iziaslav I of Kiev, Sviatoslav II of Kiev, and Vsevolod I of Kiev, among others. Their daughters included Elizabeth, who married King Harald Hardrada of Norway; Anastasia, who married King Andrew I of Hungary; and Anna, who married King Henry I of France. Through these children Anne de Novgorod became an ancestor of numerous royal lines. Russian chronicle tradition records that Princess Irina, the wife of Yaroslav, died in 1050. She was buried in the Cathedral of Saint Sophia in Kiev, where a sarcophagus associated with Yaroslav and his consort remains. Orthodox hagiographical tradition holds that she adopted the monastic name Anna before her death and that she is the Saint Anna commemorated as princess of Novgorod. Her principal feast day in the Eastern Orthodox calendar is 10 February. The epithet of Novgorod reflects both her early residence and political ties to that city and the particular honor given her in Novgorodian ecclesiastical memory, even though her death and burial are tied to Kiev.

The surviving evidence for her life is uneven. The Russian Primary Chronicle notes her death but says little of her deeds; the Norse kings' sagas supply the Swedish and Norwegian diplomatic context; liturgical texts and later lives of saints shape the picture of her piety and monastic end. Modern historians therefore treat precise claims about her birth year, the details of any formal tonsure, and some elements of the later cult with caution, while accepting the core outline of a Swedish royal daughter who became grand princess of Kiev, mother of a widely connected generation of princes and queens, and a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church.
