Biography

Short Description

Anne de Xainctonge was born on 21 November 1567 in Dijon, in the Duchy of Burgundy, then part of the Kingdom of France. She was the daughter of Jean de Xainctonge, a councillor in the parlement of Dijon, and thus belonged to the city's legal nobility. She grew up amid the French Wars of Religion, when Catholic reform and Protestant challenge contended for Burgundy. The Society of Jesus had opened a college in Dijon, and its preaching, spiritual direction, and program of humanist Christian education for boys left a lasting mark on her. From an early age she resolved not to marry and to devote herself to the instruction of girls, especially those too poor to enter the enclosed convent schools that were then almost the only formal option for female education.

She conceived a community of women who would live without monastic enclosure, in imitation of the Jesuit apostolic model, so that they could teach day pupils of every social class. Such a plan ran against the grain of post-Tridentine discipline, which pressed women religious toward solemn vows and papal cloister. Her family opposed the project, and she could not obtain the support she needed in Dijon. In 1596 she therefore left her native city for Dole, the capital of the Free County of Burgundy (Franche-Comté), a Habsburg territory adjoining France and the seat of a parlement and a Jesuit college. There she found patrons among the Jesuits and local Catholics who were rebuilding church life after decades of conflict.

In 1606 she established at Dole the Society of the Sisters of Saint Ursula of the Blessed Virgin, also known as the Ursulines of Dole. The new company took Saint Ursula as its patron and stood in a broad Ursuline tradition that went back to Angela Merici, yet it remained canonically and practically distinct from the cloistered Ursuline nuns spreading in France and Italy. The sisters lived in community, bound by simple vows rather than solemn profession, and they opened schools in which girls learned Christian doctrine, reading, writing, and the skills thought suitable to their state. Because they were not enclosed, they could receive external students, including the poor, without requiring them to board inside a monastery. Anne de Xainctonge governed the society as its foundress and first superior, forming its spirit of humility, obedience, and pedagogical zeal.

She died at Dole on 8 June 1621, unmarried and without children, having spent her adult life in consecrated celibacy and the work of teaching. The congregation survived her and spread in Franche-Comté and later farther afield; it continues as the Ursulines of Anne de Xainctonge, still dedicated to education. She has not been beatified or canonized. The Catholic Church has, however, recognized the heroic character of her virtues and declared her Venerable. Her memory is honored especially by her religious family and in Dijon and Dole, the two cities that framed her vocation.
