Biography

Short Description

Annunciata Cocchetti was born on 9 May 1800 in Adro, in the province of Brescia in Lombardy, during the Napoleonic period in northern Italy. She was the daughter of Pietro Cocchetti and Maddalena Ghitti and was baptized on the day of her birth. Her childhood was marked by early bereavement: her mother died when Annunciata was about seven, and her father died a few years later, leaving her an orphan around the age of ten. She was then raised by her paternal grandmother. After her grandmother’s death she went to live with a great-uncle who was a priest at Chiari, where she received a solid education and a strong religious formation. As a young woman she felt drawn to consecrated life and hoped to enter the Ursulines, but family circumstances and her uncle’s opposition prevented her from doing so at that time.

In the early 1820s she moved to Cemmo, a village in the Camonica Valley in the province of Brescia, initially to care for two orphaned cousins and to help with their education. There she began teaching local girls, many of them poor. In 1831, encouraged by the parish priest, she opened a school for girls at Cemmo. Her work combined elementary instruction and practical skills with Christian formation at a time when formal schooling for girls in rural Lombardy was still limited. The school became the nucleus of a lasting educational apostolate in the valley.

On 3 October 1842, together with two companions, she began community religious life that grew into a new congregation, the Sisters of Saint Dorothy of Cemmo (Suore di Santa Dorotea di Cemmo). The institute took Saint Dorothy as its patron and dedicated itself to the education of girls, especially the poor, and to related works of charity. Annunciata served as superior, guiding the small community through the political and social changes of mid-nineteenth-century Lombardy and the unification of Italy. Under her direction the sisters established schools and houses in the region and obtained diocesan recognition. She remained at Cemmo for the rest of her life, directing the congregation and continuing her work among the girls entrusted to her care.

She died at Cemmo on 23 March 1882. A reputation for holiness led to the opening of a cause for beatification. Pope John Paul II beatified her on 21 April 1991 in Saint Peter’s Square in Rome. She has not been canonized. Her liturgical memorial is kept on 23 March, the anniversary of her death. The congregation she founded continues its educational and pastoral work, and her remains are venerated at the sisters’ motherhouse in Cemmo.
