Biography

Short Description

Anoub (also spelled Anub, Anoup, or Anouph) was a Christian monk of late antique Egypt, numbered among the Desert Fathers of the fourth and fifth centuries. He is known almost exclusively from the Greek and Coptic collections of monastic apophthegms known as the Sayings of the Desert Fathers (Apophthegmata Patrum). Those sayings identify him as a brother of the more famous Abba Poemen, together with whom he belonged to a group of siblings who pursued the monastic life. The brothers first lived in the desert settlement of Scetis (present-day Wadi El Natrun) in the Nitrian Desert, a major center of Egyptian eremitical and semi-eremitical monasticism.

After Scetis was sacked by Mazices raiders in the early fifth century, Anoub and his brothers withdrew to Terenuthis in the Nile Delta, where they occupied an abandoned pagan temple. The sayings portray Anoub as a teacher of silence and non-judgment. In one of the better-known anecdotes, he is described as striking a statue in the temple and afterward asking its pardon, in order to show his brothers that they should endure offenses without anger, just as an inanimate image neither resents injury nor withholds forgiveness. Another tradition records that the brothers, at Anoub’s urging, spent the weekdays in separate cells in strict quiet and gathered only on Saturday and Sunday, a pattern that combined solitude with limited common life.

The sources consistently present Anoub as a man of few words, marked by obedience, endurance, and custody of the tongue. He is not recorded as having held any ecclesiastical office such as bishop or abbot of a coenobium; he lived as an anchorite or semi-anchorite within a family of monks. No contemporary vita survives, and the apophthegms do not supply a birthplace more precise than Egypt, nor any date of birth or death. Later hagiographical calendars in the Eastern churches have assigned him a commemoration, but these dates are not attested in the earliest monastic literature.

Anoub’s memory was preserved because later generations of monks valued the brief, practical stories attached to his name as illustrations of inner stillness, freedom from scandal, and the refusal to judge one’s neighbor. He is venerated as a saint in the Coptic Orthodox tradition and among the Desert Fathers commemorated in Eastern Orthodox synaxaria. Beyond the handful of sayings, however, the historical record is silent; claims about his early life, the exact circumstances of his death, or specific patronages cannot be verified from surviving sources.
