Biography

Short Description

Ansovinus (also known as Ansovino or Ansuinus) was a ninth-century bishop of Camerino in the Marche region of central Italy and is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church. Contemporary archival evidence for his life is extremely thin; what is known comes chiefly from later medieval hagiography and from the Roman Martyrology’s notice of a bishop and confessor at Camerino. Tradition places his birth in Camerino itself and states that he was educated at the city’s cathedral school. Seeking a stricter life, he is said to have withdrawn as a hermit to Castel Raimondo, near Torcello in the Venetian lagoon. That eremitical episode cannot be confirmed from independent ninth-century sources, but it is a stable element of his legend and underpins the later emphasis on his austerity and personal charity. No reliable source records a precise year of birth, a spouse, or children; the vitae present him as a celibate cleric from early adulthood.

According to the received accounts, Ansovinus was summoned from solitude to the episcopal see of Camerino. One strand of the tradition makes him confessor to a Carolingian emperor—variously identified as Louis the Pious or Louis II—and has him accept the bishopric only under papal command, sometimes associated with Pope Leo IV (847–855). These identifications sit uneasily with the death date of 13 March 840 that appears in many martyrologies and in standard English-language notices; some Italian compilations therefore prefer a death in 868. The contradiction is a warning that almost nothing in the chronology can be fixed with certainty. What the traditions share is that he occupied the see of Camerino in the ninth century and that he was remembered as a pastor unusually concerned with the material welfare of his people rather than as a court prelate or monastic founder of a named religious order.

Hagiographical narratives dwell on a severe famine in the Camerino district during his episcopate. Ansovinus is described as opening church stores to the hungry and as obtaining, by prayer, a miraculous multiplication of grain or oil kept in a jar (the orcio), the attribute with which he is most often shown in later art. He is also credited with securing from imperial authority relief from military levies so that local men could remain to work the fields, an episode later used to explain his patronage of harvests and of the protection of crops. He is said to have restored churches and to have governed with a reputation for justice and almsgiving. None of these episodes can be dated from independent ninth-century records; they belong to the pious portrait constructed by his cult and should not be treated as chronicle fact.

Ansovinus died on 13 March, the day retained as his feast in the Roman Martyrology. He was buried in his episcopal city; his relics were later enshrined in Camerino’s cathedral, the Cattedrale di Santa Maria Annunziata. His cult is of the pre-congregation type: it grew from local veneration rather than from a formal papal canonization or beatification of the later medieval or modern kind, and no individual pope can be named as canonizing him. He remains the principal patron of Camerino and is invoked for good harvests and the safeguarding of crops. Artistic representations typically show him as a bishop with a pitcher, a vessel of grain, or produce. Beyond this outline, the documentary record is sparse, and a careful account must distinguish the stable core of his identity—ninth-century bishop of Camerino, saint of 13 March—from the uncorroborated embellishments of the later vitae.
