Biography

Short Description

Anstrudis (also called Anstrude or Austrudis) was a seventh-century Frankish abbess of the monastery of Saint John at Laon, in northern Gaul. She was the daughter of Saint Sadalberga and Saint Blandinus. Sadalberga belonged to the Gundoinid family, being a daughter of Gundoin, Duke of Alsace; she had first been married to a nobleman named Richramn, who died young, and afterward to Blandinus. Several of their children entered the religious life, including Anstrudis and her brother Baldwin (Balduinus or Baudoin), who became an archdeacon. After a period of married life, Sadalberga founded a double monastery at Laon dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, in the Columbanian tradition associated with Luxeuil and with the mixed Columbanian-Benedictine observance typical of many Merovingian houses.

When Sadalberga died, traditionally around 670, Anstrudis succeeded her as abbess while still a young woman. Hagiographical accounts portray her as a firm and charitable superior who upheld the monastic rule and defended the independence and property of her community. The political disorders of late Merovingian Gaul, especially the rivalry between Neustria and Austrasia and the power of the mayors of the palace, bore directly on the abbey.

Anstrudis came into conflict with Ebroin, Mayor of the Palace of Neustria. According to her vita, he sought to impose his authority on the house or to seize its resources and showed hostility toward Anstrudis and her family. Her brother Baldwin was sent to treat with Ebroin and was murdered, an act that the hagiographers attribute to Ebroin’s circle. Traditions further recount harassment of Anstrudis herself, including attempts to drag her from the church, accusations against her, and threats to the nuns; she is said to have taken refuge at the altar and to have persisted in defending the community. After Ebroin’s assassination in 680 or 681, pressure on the abbey appears to have eased.

Anstrudis continued as abbess until her death, traditionally dated to 17 October 688, and was buried at her monastery in Laon. A local cult grew up around her, and she was commemorated in the diocese of Laon and in medieval martyrologies; her feast is kept on 17 October. The chief source is a Latin vita which, like other Merovingian hagiographies, combines family and institutional memory with conventional miracle stories. Historians generally accept the outline of her parentage, abbacy, and clash with Ebroin, while treating legendary details with caution. No reliable source records a precise year or place of birth.
