Biography

Short Description

Saint Ansverus, whose name also appears as Ansuerus and Ansver, was a Benedictine monk and abbot of the eleventh century associated with the monastery of Saint George at Ratzeburg, in the borderlands between Saxon territory and the Wendish lands of the lower Elbe in what is now northern Germany. Surviving sources do not record a verified year or place of birth. He is generally described in later tradition as being of noble Saxon family and as having entered the Benedictine community at Ratzeburg, a house that formed part of the missionary effort among the pagan West Slavic peoples of the region. In due course he was chosen as abbot of that monastery. Almost nothing reliable is known of the details of his abbacy or of his personal character beyond his membership in the Order of Saint Benedict.

In 1066 a major pagan uprising broke out among the Wends after the murder of the Christian Obotrite prince Gottschalk. Churches, clergy, and monastic houses in Holstein and the neighboring Slavic territories were attacked. Ansverus and a number of monks of his community were captured by the insurgents and put to death by stoning. The traditional date of the martyrdom is 15 July 1066, and the event is located in the vicinity of Ratzeburg. Later hagiographical accounts speak of a group of companions who died with him, sometimes numbered at eighteen or more, though the exact number is not established by contemporary evidence. Their deaths belonged to a wider wave of violence that for a time reversed Christian gains in the western Baltic region.

After the re-establishment of the bishopric of Ratzeburg in the twelfth century, Bishop Evermode, a Premonstratensian who had been a companion of Saint Norbert of Xanten, promoted the cult of the martyred abbot. The relics of Ansverus were recovered and enshrined in the cathedral of Ratzeburg, where they became an object of local veneration. He was honored as a martyr and as a principal saint of the diocese, and his feast was observed on 15 July. No papal bull of canonization from the later medieval period is known; his recognition as a saint rests on ancient local cult and subsequent acceptance in the Catholic Church.

Beyond these outlines the historical record is sparse. No writings by Ansverus have been preserved, and the earliest notices of his life and death are brief. He remains significant in the religious history of Holstein and the former diocese of Ratzeburg as a representative of the Benedictine monasteries that stood on the missionary frontier of Latin Christendom and as a martyr of the Wendish revolt of 1066.
