Biography

Short Description

Ante Antić was a Croatian Franciscan friar and Catholic priest of the Order of Friars Minor, active in Dalmatia in the twentieth century. In Croatian Catholic and Franciscan writing he is often styled a Servant of God, a title used when local promoters have prepared or opened a cause for beatification. He has not been beatified or canonized by the Holy See, he is not inscribed in the General Roman Calendar, and he has no approved feast day or official patronage. Outside the regional literature of the Franciscan province on the eastern Adriatic, biographical information is sparse, and English-language encyclopedias and standard hagiographical dictionaries do not devote independent, critically sourced articles to him.

Regional notices place his birth in 1893 in the Imotski hinterland of inland Dalmatia, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He entered the Franciscans, completed the usual course of religious and priestly formation, and was ordained. His working life appears to have been that of a conventual friar rather than that of a prelate, academic, or missionary celebrity: choir, community life, preaching, and long hours in the confessional. Later pious accounts, which have not been independently audited for this notice, dwell on humility, asceticism, and a reputation as a spiritual counsellor among clergy and laity in Split and other Dalmatian houses of the order.

His lifetime coincided with the end of Habsburg rule, the formation of the Yugoslav state, the Second World War, and the imposition of communist government, all of which disrupted Catholic institutions along the Adriatic. Franciscan provinces in Croatia faced confiscation of property, restrictions on public ministry, and pressure on vocations. How far Antić himself was imprisoned, displaced, or otherwise singled out is not established in the sources available here; what is clear is that he remained a friar-priest and that his memory was cultivated inside the order after his death rather than in the secular press.

He died in 1965 in Split. Burial is presumed to have been in Franciscan keeping in that city, but the precise tomb has not been verified for this record. After his death, testimonies of holiness were collected and his name was associated with a beatification process at diocesan or provincial level. Until Rome issues a decree of beatification, any cult remains unofficial. He was a professed religious bound by celibacy, was never pope or patriarch of an Eastern see, and is not documented as having married or had children.

A responsible account must underline the limits of the evidence. Much of what circulates about Antić is devotional rather than critical: undated anecdotes, unconfirmed miracles, and details that may derive from a single unpublished vita. The outline that can be stated with caution is that of a Dalmatian Franciscan priest of the first two thirds of the twentieth century, remembered locally for confessional ministry and personal austerity, whose cause, if it proceeds, still awaits the judgment of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints. Further certainty would require the published acts of that cause, the archives of the relevant Franciscan province, and civil registers for birth and death.
