Biography
The historical figure known as Anthemius van Poitiers is poorly documented in surviving sources. The Dutch form of the name, employing the preposition van, indicates Anthemius of Poitiers and points to an association with the city of Poitiers in present-day France. Poitiers, ancient Limonum, served as an important Gallo-Roman and later Merovingian episcopal center. Despite the prominence of the see, standard catalogues of the bishops of Poitiers, including those compiled from late antique and medieval records, do not list an incumbent named Anthemius.
No entry corresponding to this name appears in the principal Western martyrologies, including the Martyrologium Hieronymianum, the martyrology of Bede, or the Roman Martyrology in its various recensions. Likewise, the great Bollandist collection Acta Sanctorum and modern dictionaries of saints contain no vita or notice that can be securely identified with Anthemius of Poitiers. Local liturgical calendars of the diocese of Poitiers similarly lack a feast that can be attributed to him with confidence.
It is conceivable that the name reflects a local or regional cult that never achieved wider recognition, or that it represents a confusion with another saint of similar name, such as Anthimus of Nicomedia or one of the Constantinopolitan patriarchs named Anthimus. The Wikidata item Q113276452 suggests that some database entry exists, yet without corroboration from independent historical or liturgical texts, the details of birth, career, death, and veneration cannot be established. In hagiographical study it is essential to distinguish well-attested holy persons from names that appear only in isolated or late compilations.
Consequently, virtually every biographical particular—date and place of birth, ecclesiastical status, manner of death, burial, and subsequent cult—remains unknown. No reliable source records a spouse, children, religious order, or patronage. Until primary evidence or a critically edited local tradition comes to light, Anthemius van Poitiers must be regarded as an obscure and unverified figure in the history of Christian sanctity.
