Biography

Short Description

Saint Antholian (also rendered Antholianus) is counted among the early Christian martyrs of Auvergne in Roman Gaul. Nearly everything that can be stated about him with historical caution derives from Saint Gregory of Tours, the sixth-century bishop and historian who was himself a native of the Auvergne. In his History of the Franks and Glory of the Martyrs, Gregory preserved the local memory of a group of Christians put to death at Clermont (the Gallo-Roman city of Augustonemetum). He names Antholian together with the priests Cassius and Victorinus, the deacon Maximus, the layman Liminius, and other unnamed companions who suffered for the faith in that city.

The events belong to the third century, the period in which the Church in Gaul was still being planted. Later tradition associated these martyrs with the missionary activity of Saint Austremonius, regarded as the first bishop of Clermont and one of the seven bishops said to have been sent to evangelize the Gallic provinces. Gregory does not supply a detailed passion narrative or name the precise imperial edict under which they died. Subsequent hagiographers have often placed the persecution in the reign of Valerian, whose measures of the later 250s struck at clergy and prominent laity, but the exact year remains unknown and no contemporary court records or independent acta survive.

Antholian is identified as a layman rather than a cleric. Beyond that single notice, his life is undocumented. No reliable source records his birthplace, family, occupation, or the circumstances of his conversion. It is not known whether he was married or had children. Clermont was an important administrative and commercial centre in Aquitania; the local church clearly kept the memory of these martyrs, for their cult was already established when Gregory wrote some three centuries afterward.

Veneration of Antholian remained essentially regional. He is commemorated on 6 February in certain martyrologies and in the liturgical tradition of the diocese of Clermont, ordinarily together with his companions. As an ancient martyr he was never the subject of a later papal canonization process; his cultus rests on immemorial local tradition. No particular patronages of places, professions, or causes are widely attached to his name. The extreme brevity of the historical record is typical of many of the earliest witnesses of Christianity in Gaul.
