Biography

Short Description

Blessed Antonio della Chiesa was an Italian Dominican friar and priest of the fifteenth century, born in 1394 at San Germano (today San Germano Vercellese) in Piedmont, in northwestern Italy. He came from the noble Della Chiesa family of that district. In his youth he entered the Order of Preachers at the Dominican convent of Vercelli. The early 1400s were a period of observant reform inside the Dominican Order, as communities sought to restore stricter common life, poverty, and the preaching mission after the disruptions of plague, the Avignon papacy, and the Western Schism. Antonio took up that observant spirit and was ordained a priest.

He became known as a preacher and as a religious superior. Over the course of his life in the order he served as prior of several Dominican houses, including the convents of Como, Savona, Florence, and Bologna. In those offices he worked to uphold regular discipline and the ideals of Dominican life rather than to accumulate personal fame. Later Dominican tradition presents him as austere, prayerful, and administratively competent. He belongs to the same broad fifteenth-century climate of mendicant reform in Italy that produced better-documented figures, though he himself left no large body of writings and was not a bishop or a founder of a new congregation.

Antonio della Chiesa died on 22 January 1459 at Como, where he was then living at the Dominican convent. A local cult grew up after his death among Dominicans and in the surrounding region. On 15 May 1819 Pope Pius VII confirmed that longstanding cultus, an act that in the procedure of the time constituted beatification by confirmation of cult (equipollent beatification). He has never been canonized. His liturgical memorial is kept on 22 January.

Relatively little contemporary documentation of his inner life or of individual episodes survives compared with more famous saints of the same century. What is known comes chiefly from Dominican chronicles and later hagiographical summaries: noble Piedmontese origin, entry at Vercelli, a series of priorates in northern and central Italy, a reputation for observance, and death at Como in 1459. He remains a lesser-known blessed of the Order of Preachers, remembered mainly in Dominican calendars and in local Piedmontese and Lombard devotion rather than as a widely invoked patron of particular places or causes.
