Biography

Short Description

Anthony Nguyễn Hữu Quỳnh (Vietnamese: Antôn Nguyễn Hữu Quỳnh) was a Vietnamese Catholic layman of the nineteenth century, remembered as a physician, catechist, and martyr, and numbered among the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam. He was born in 1768 in the village of Mỹ Hương, in Nghĩa Hưng prefecture, Nam Định province, in the Red River Delta of northern Vietnam, then under the Nguyễn dynasty. The region already had a substantial Catholic population, the fruit of earlier Jesuit, Dominican, and Paris Foreign Missions activity. Raised in that Christian setting, he practiced traditional Vietnamese medicine and also served the Church as a thầy giảng (catechist), a lay ministry of great importance when ordained clergy were few or forced into hiding. Catechists instructed converts, supported scattered communities, and often acted as the public face of the Church during persecution.

In the 1830s Emperor Minh Mạng issued a succession of severe edicts against Christianity, which the court treated as a heterodox teaching and a possible instrument of foreign influence. Catechists were frequent targets. Nguyễn Hữu Quỳnh was arrested about 1838 for his faith and his ministry. He was imprisoned in Nam Định and, according to the traditions gathered for the later beatification process, remained steadfast under interrogation. On 10 July 1840 he was executed by strangulation (xử giảo) at the execution ground known as Bảy Mẫu in Nam Định, together with another catechist, Peter Nguyễn Khắc Tự (Phêrô Nguyễn Khắc Tự). He was then about seventy-two years of age. The date falls still within Minh Mạng’s reign (the emperor died in January 1841).

Local Catholics and missionary reports preserved his memory. He was beatified by Pope Leo XIII on 27 May 1900, in a large group of Vietnamese confessors, and was canonized by Pope John Paul II on 19 June 1988 in Rome together with 116 companions—bishops, priests, religious, and laity, Vietnamese and European. The Catholic Church commemorates the 117 Martyrs of Vietnam collectively on 24 November. As a group they are honored as patrons of Vietnam.

Surviving documentation for individual lay Vietnamese martyrs of this period is relatively sparse. It depends on missionary correspondence, local tradition, and the summary accounts prepared for beatification. Details of Nguyễn Hữu Quỳnh’s family life, including whether he married or had children, are not firmly established in the widely available historical record. What is consistently attested is his dual role as healer and catechist, his advanced age at execution, and his death for refusing to renounce the Christian faith during the Minh Mạng persecutions.
