Biography

Short Description

Anthony Nguyễn Đích (Vietnamese: Antôn Nguyễn Đích) was a Vietnamese Catholic lay martyr of the nineteenth century. He was born in 1769 in the village of Chi Long, in the Nam Dinh region of northern Vietnam, part of the Red River Delta, where Catholic communities had existed since seventeenth-century missionary activity. Raised in the faith during a period when Christianity was frequently regarded with suspicion by the Nguyễn dynasty, he worked as a farmer, the ordinary occupation of rural Tonkin. Hagiographical accounts from the Catholic tradition indicate that he married and had children and lived as a committed member of his local parish while the practice of Christianity remained politically precarious.

In the 1830s Emperor Minh Mạng issued edicts intended to suppress Christianity, which the court treated as a heterodox teaching at odds with Confucian state order. Catholics were pressed to recant by trampling a crucifix, and those who aided priests faced severe punishment. Nguyễn Đích is recorded as having given shelter and assistance to clergy who moved clandestinely among the faithful. That assistance, a capital offense under the imperial decrees, led to his arrest in 1838. He was held in the Nam Dinh area, then a focus of both Catholic life and official enforcement of the anti-Christian campaign.

In prison he underwent interrogation and torment meant to force apostasy. Church sources describe him as remaining firm in his refusal to abandon the faith. On 12 August 1838 he was executed by beheading in Nam Dinh, at about sixty-nine years of age. His death belonged to a wider series of executions of Vietnamese Catholics, clergy and laity alike, during the Minh Mạng persecutions.

He was beatified on 27 May 1900 by Pope Leo XIII among a group of sixty-four martyrs of Vietnam, and was canonized on 19 June 1988 by Pope John Paul II together with one hundred sixteen other Vietnamese martyrs, including native Vietnamese as well as Spanish Dominican and French missionary companions. The group is commemorated collectively in the Catholic liturgical calendar on 24 November. As a lay farmer put to death for aiding priests, his life shows the part played by ordinary Vietnamese Catholics in sustaining the Church under nineteenth-century persecution. Beyond the circumstances of arrest and execution, personal biographical detail remains limited and rests mainly on the documentation assembled for the Roman beatification and canonization processes and on local Vietnamese Catholic memory.
