Biography

Short Description

Anthony of Dymsk, also known as Anthony Dymsky, was a Russian Orthodox monk and monastic founder active in the Novgorod lands in the late twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. He is venerated as a prepodobny, or venerable monastic saint, in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His traditional Life, compiled well after his lifetime, describes him as a native of Novgorod who entered the Khutyn Monastery of the Transfiguration, founded by Saint Varlaam of Khutyn near Novgorod on the Volkhov. There Anthony received the tonsure and was trained in the ascetic life by Varlaam, who died in 1192 or 1193. The same sources state that the community wished Anthony to succeed his teacher as abbot, but that he refused, seeking instead a more hidden life and the holy places of the East.

According to the hagiographical tradition, Anthony traveled to Constantinople and lived for a time on Mount Athos before returning to northern Rus. He did not resume residence at Khutyn. He settled instead as a hermit on the forested shore of Lake Dymskoe, a misty lake about fifteen versts from Tikhvin, in what was then the Novgorod hinterland. Disciples gathered around him, and their settlement became the monastery later known as the Anthony-Dymsky Monastery, associated with the name of Saint Anthony the Great. Local tradition also connected the saint with a large boulder in the lake, used as a place of prayer and later as a pilgrimage site. The way of life attributed to him combines the solitude of the northern hermits with the communal monasticism already established in the Novgorod region.

Church tradition dates his death to 1224 and states that he was buried in the monastery he had founded. He is commemorated on 24 June, the day linked with his repose, and on 17 January, the day linked with the uncovering of his relics, as well as in the Synaxis of the Saints of Novgorod. The monastery suffered in later centuries, including during the warfare of the early seventeenth century in the Tikhvin region, and it was closed during the Soviet period before eventual revival. Relics and the memory of the lake-stone remained at the center of local devotion.

Almost nothing about Anthony can be verified from strictly contemporary chronicles; the written Life is late, and secure documentary mentions of the Dymsky monastery belong to later medieval and early modern centuries. Historians therefore treat the pilgrimage to Athos, the precise year of death, and many narrative episodes as traditional rather than independently attested. Even so, he fits a well-attested pattern in which disciples of the twelfth-century Novgorod abbots established new hermitages in the forests and lake country to the east and northeast of the city. He was not a bishop, patriarch, or pope, and the sources present him solely as a monk. No marriage or children are recorded. His cult did not develop a large list of specialized patronages and has remained chiefly local, tied to the Anthony-Dymsky Monastery and the Tikhvin-Novgorod monastic landscape.
