Biography

Short Description

Anthony the Hermit, also known as Antony of Lérins, was a Christian monk and hermit of late antiquity, remembered in the Latin martyrological tradition rather than through a long contemporary vita. Traditional notices place his birth about 468 in Valeria in Lower Pannonia, a Danubian province of the later Roman Empire in the region of present-day Hungary. His father died when Anthony was still a child—at the age of eight according to the received account—and he was then entrusted to Saint Severinus of Noricum, the ascetic missionary who organized Christian life and charity along the threatened frontier of Noricum. Anthony remained in Severinus’s household and under his spiritual direction until Severinus died in 482. That early formation among the monks and clergy gathered around Severinus is the starting point given for Anthony’s own monastic vocation.

After Severinus’s death, Anthony went south into Italy with his uncle Constantius, described in the sources as bishop of Lauriacum (Lorch) on the Danube. In Italy he continued to live a religious life. In time he travelled to southern Gaul and entered the island monastery of Lérins, off the coast of Provence, which Honoratus had founded earlier in the fifth century and which had become a major school of Western monasticism. He is said to have lived there as a monk for about two years. Seeking a stricter solitude than the coenobium afforded, he then withdrew to live as a hermit. Later summaries locate this eremitical period in the Jura mountains; other notices associate his last years more closely with Lérins itself. Disciples are said to have gathered around him because of his austerity and reputation for holiness.

He died about 520. The precise place of his death and burial is not firmly established in the surviving notices, which are brief and were compiled in a hagiographical rather than a documentary spirit. He was honoured as a saint in the monastic and local calendars of Gaul and is entered in the Roman Martyrology on 28 December, with mention of the monastery of Lérins. Like most saints of his era, he was recognized by cultus and martyrological listing rather than by a later papal process of canonization. He should not be confused with Anthony the Great of Egypt, the more famous father of Christian monasticism, whose feast falls in January.

Beyond this outline, little can be verified. No lengthy contemporary life comparable to those of the great Egyptian or Gallic abbots survives, and later summaries sometimes differ in the order of his stays in Italy, at Lérins, and in the mountains. What the tradition consistently affirms is a life begun on the Danube frontier, shaped by Severinus, completed in the monastic world of Gaul, and remembered for eremitical withdrawal.
