Biography

Short Description

The individual recorded under the name Anthony and associated with Wikidata identifier Q4067256 cannot be matched with certainty to a single, well-documented historical biography on the basis of the information supplied. Christian history contains a great many persons of this name, including desert fathers, medieval mendicants, Russian monastic founders, and Orthodox hierarchs of various sees. In the absence of a confirmed Wikipedia article or a set of primary sources that uniquely identify this particular item, no year of birth, place of birth, or year of death can be stated.

Hagiographical method requires that an office-taking date never be substituted for a birth date and that legendary or late traditions not be presented as verified fact. Because the present subject has not been securely distinguished from other bearers of the same name, claims about religious order, marital status, children, papal or patriarchal office, feast day, and patronage cannot be advanced. Standard martyrologies and synaxaria list multiple Anthonys with overlapping or conflicting cults; assigning any one of those cults to Q4067256 would be conjectural.

What can be said in general is that the name Anthony, from the Roman nomen Antonius, entered Christian usage in late antiquity and became especially prominent after the Life of Anthony written by Athanasius of Alexandria circulated in both Greek and Latin. Subsequent centuries saw the name adopted by monks in Egypt, Palestine, Gaul, Italy, and the Slavic lands. Without further identifying data such as a see, a monastery of foundation, or a reliably dated vita, the life of this Anthony remains an empty record.

Responsible historical practice in such cases is to leave chronological and geographical fields blank rather than to import details from a more famous namesake. Any future identification should rest on the references contained in the Wikidata item itself and on critical comparison with episcopal lists, monastic necrologies, and authentic hagiographical texts.
