Biography

Short Description

Anthusa of Constantinople was an eighth-century Byzantine imperial daughter and nun, commemorated as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church. She was born in Constantinople to Emperor Constantine V, who reigned from 741 to 775 and was a principal architect of imperial iconoclasm, and to his third wife, Empress Eudokia. Constantine V’s earlier marriage had already produced his successor Leo IV; with Eudokia he had several sons later granted the rank of Caesar, together with this daughter. Contemporary chronicles do not preserve a securely attested year of her birth. Later hagiographical tradition places it in the mid-eighth century, during the first period of Byzantine iconoclasm, when the court at Constantinople enforced the prohibition of icons and punished their defenders.

Later lives connect her name with Saint Anthusa of Mantineon, an iconodule abbess. According to that tradition, Empress Eudokia suffered a difficult labor; the abbess was said to have predicted the birth of a son and a daughter, and the girl was named Anthusa after her. Raised in the Great Palace amid an iconoclast dynasty, Anthusa is nonetheless remembered for personal piety and for loyalty to the veneration of icons, in contrast to her father’s religious policy. She did not marry. Hagiographical sources present her as a virgin who refused a dynastic marriage and the ordinary political uses of an emperor’s daughter, choosing instead a life of charity and asceticism.

After Constantine V died in 775, Anthusa is reported to have distributed a large part of her inheritance to the poor and to have entered the monastic life in Constantinople. Some later accounts state that she was tonsured by Patriarch Tarasios, the hierarch associated with the restoration of icons at the Second Council of Nicaea in 787, though that detail is not independently confirmed by contemporary historians. She spent her remaining years as a nun, associated in tradition with a convent in or near the capital. She thus lived through the brief iconophile turn under Leo IV, the reign of Constantine VI and Empress Irene, and the unsettled years that followed, remaining a figure of imperial birth who had abandoned palace rank for the cloister.

Exact circumstances of her death are not recorded in surviving eighth- or ninth-century histories. Later calendars often place her falling asleep in Constantinople in the early ninth century, but the year is not securely established and should not be treated as a documented date. She was remembered as a holy virgin and monastic rather than as a martyr. The Eastern Orthodox Church keeps her feast on 12 April; some calendars also associate an Anthusa of Constantinople with 18 April, and the two commemorations have sometimes been conflated. No distinct list of patronages is attached to her in standard sources, and the place of her burial is not preserved. Her cult survived mainly in the synaxaria as an example of an emperor’s daughter who chose monastic poverty and iconodule faith over the iconoclast court of her father.
