Biography

Short Description

Anthusa was a Christian woman of fourth-century Antioch, in the Roman province of Syria, remembered above all as the mother of John Chrysostom. The ecclesiastical historians Socrates Scholasticus and Sozomen, writing in the fifth century, name her as the wife of Secundus, a man of rank in the imperial administration or army at Antioch, and as the mother of John. Palladius of Helenopolis, in his Dialogue on the Life of St. John Chrysostom, adds that she was left a widow at the age of twenty and that she declined to marry again. These notices, though brief, place her among the Christian households of a great eastern city at a time when the church was emerging from the last pagan imperial reaction and when Antioch itself was divided by the Meletian schism and by the continuing prestige of traditional Greek education.

The most substantial ancient portrait of Anthusa appears in John Chrysostom's own treatise On the Priesthood. There he recasts, in the form of a maternal speech, the memory of a young widow who had to protect her child's inheritance, face the suspicions that attached to an unmarried woman of property, and keep a household together without a husband's legal standing. In that speech she begs her son not to abandon her for the monastic life of the Syrian countryside, arguing that his departure would leave her twice bereaved. The passage cannot be read as a stenographic record, but it is early evidence that Anthusa's widowhood and her hold on her son's affections were already part of the story told about John's youth. She evidently saw to it that he received the rhetorical training that Antioch, through teachers such as Libanius, could still provide, while also raising him in the Christian faith. Like many Christians of that generation, she did not have him baptized in infancy; John received baptism only as a young man, from Bishop Meletius of Antioch.

Later legend embroidered this outline. A well-known anecdote, not attested in Libanius's own writings, claims that the famous pagan sophist, on learning how Anthusa had conducted herself after her husband's death, exclaimed in praise of Christian women. The story is best understood as a hagiographical compliment rather than as a documented remark, yet it shows the moral type under which she was remembered: the chaste and capable widow who formed a great churchman. Some later lives of John mention a sister as well as a mother, but the early historians are silent on other children, and nothing certain can be said on that point beyond the fact of John's own birth. Anthusa's social world was that of the curial and official classes of Antioch, Greek-speaking, legally Roman, and increasingly Christian in public identity after the reign of Constantine and his sons.

No ancient source records the year of Anthusa's birth or death, nor the place of her burial. She was still alive when John, in early adulthood, was drawn to asceticism, and she had died before he became a presbyter of Antioch and, later, bishop of Constantinople. She left no writings, and no contemporary cult of her relics is described. In subsequent centuries she has occasionally been honored in Eastern Christian commemoration as a righteous mother, but she did not acquire a stable, universal feast day in the major martyrologies of East or West, nor is she associated with a defined list of patronages. The historical Anthusa remains a figure known almost entirely through her son's career and through the fourth- and fifth-century literature that grew up around him: a widow of Antioch whose piety and household authority were taken, already in antiquity, to have shaped one of the principal voices of the Greek church.
