Biography

Short Description

Antidius (known in French as Antide) was a bishop of Besançon in eastern Gaul, in the country of the Sequani, during the early fifth century, and is venerated as a martyr in the Catholic Church. Almost nothing about him can be established from strictly contemporary writing. What is known comes from later episcopal lists of Besançon, from medieval martyrologies, and from a local cult that grew up around his memory. Besançon, the Roman Vesontio, was already an important city and an established Christian see when the Rhine frontier collapsed. In the winter of 406 a coalition of Vandals, Alans, and Suebi crossed into Gaul, and the following years were marked by raids, famine, and the breakdown of imperial order in the interior. It is in that setting that later tradition places Antidius’s episcopate and death.

Later legend made him a disciple of Saint Benignus of Dijon, the missionary martyr associated with the conversion of Burgundy. That claim is chronologically implausible if Benignus is dated to the second or third century, and it is best read as a pious attempt to tie the church of Besançon to an early apostolic or sub-apostolic origin rather than as a recoverable fact of Antidius’s biography. No reliable evidence survives concerning his birthplace, family, education, or the circumstances of his elevation to the see. He was a diocesan bishop, not a member of a later religious order, and nothing documented remains about whether he had ever been married. He appears in the succession of the bishops of Besançon and is remembered as having held the church there at the moment when barbarian war-bands were moving through the province of Maxima Sequanorum.

According to the traditional passion account, Antidius was seized by Vandal raiders and put to death for the Christian faith at a place called Ruffiacum, generally identified with Ruffey-le-Château in the present département of Doubs, not far from Besançon (some notices prefer Ruffey-sur-l’Ognon because of a related river legend). The year most often assigned is 411, though some compilations give a date around 407; neither figure rests on a contemporary chronicle, and both belong to hagiographical convention rather than to a dated imperial or episcopal record. One version of the story states that his body was thrown into the river Ognon and afterwards recovered. The specific naming of the Vandals in the martyrologies may simplify a more chaotic reality in which several peoples were at large in Gaul; the figure of a barbarian king sometimes called Chrocus who appears in related regional legends is itself historically problematic. What the tradition preserves with more confidence is the memory that a bishop of Besançon named Antidius was killed in the violence of those years and was honoured as a martyr.

His relics became an object of local veneration, were associated with Ruffey, and were in time translated to Besançon, where they were connected with the cathedral and with churches under his name. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him on 25 June as bishop and martyr at Besançon in Gaul, slain by the Vandals for the faith of Christ. The cult remained essentially diocesan; the principal patrons of Besançon are other saints, and no wide list of patronages is securely attached to Antidius. He was never the subject of a formal papal canonization of the later medieval or modern type. His status as a saint rests on ancient popular veneration and on inclusion in the martyrologies. Because the written lives are late and legendary, historians treat the details of his passion with caution, while still accepting that a fifth-century bishop of Besançon of this name was remembered as a martyr from an early date and that his feast on 25 June has been observed in the local church for many centuries.
