Biography

Short Description

Antipas of Pergamum is a Christian martyr of the first century, known principally from a brief notice in the New Testament. In the message addressed to the church at Pergamum in the Book of Revelation (2:13), Christ commends that community for holding fast to his name even in a city described as the place where Satan's throne is, and recalls Antipas as my faithful witness, who was killed among you. The Greek term martys, rendered witness, already bears the sense of one whose testimony has been sealed by death. Antipas is the only disciple of Jesus named as a martyr in Revelation besides Christ himself, who is called the faithful witness in the opening of the same book. Pergamum (Pergamon), in the Roman province of Asia in western Asia Minor, was a leading Hellenistic and imperial city, home to a great altar of Zeus, a celebrated sanctuary of the healing god Asclepius, and an early temple of the imperial cult of Rome and Augustus. Any of these institutions, or the city's standing as a seat of Roman authority in Asia, may underlie the apocalyptic image of Satan's throne. The scriptural reference implies that Antipas had already been put to death by the time the Apocalypse was written, a composition generally assigned to the later first century.

Later Christian tradition identified this Antipas as bishop of Pergamum and as a disciple of the apostle John. Eastern hagiographical sources, including the Byzantine synaxaria, present him as having been ordained to the episcopate by John the Theologian and as a contemporary of the apostles who guided the church in a strongly pagan environment. These identifications do not appear in the New Testament and cannot be confirmed from contemporary non-Christian records; they represent the way a single scriptural verse was expanded in the liturgical memory of the churches of Asia Minor and, subsequently, of Constantinople. No reliable evidence survives concerning his birth, parentage, or early life, and nothing certain is known of whether he was married or had children.

Narratives of his passion belong to later legend rather than to first-century documentation. According to the Greek hagiographical tradition, Antipas was brought before pagan authorities for refusing to offer sacrifice, confessed Christ, and was enclosed in a red-hot bronze bull, an instrument of torture familiar from classical stories of the Sicilian tyrant Phalaris, and so burned to death. Some accounts place the martyrdom under the emperor Nero (54-68), others under Domitian (81-96); a date around the year 92 is often repeated in modern calendars and reference works but is not independently verified. The Roman Martyrology commemorates him at Pergamum on 11 April as the faithful witness mentioned in the Apocalypse, without naming the emperor or describing the manner of death. Whatever the precise circumstances, the text of Revelation remains the earliest and most secure attestation that a Christian named Antipas was killed at Pergamum in the first century.

Veneration of Antipas took root in both East and West. His feast is kept on 11 April in the Roman Martyrology and in the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic calendars, where he is honored as a hieromartyr, that is, a bishop who died for the faith. Byzantine tradition associated his tomb at Pergamum with miraculous healings, especially of toothache and other ailments of the teeth, and he continues to be invoked in Orthodox prayer for relief from dental pain. Dedications and relics connected with his name appear in later medieval sources, but the original burial at Pergamum is a matter of local and liturgical tradition rather than of archaeological demonstration. Historically, little can be added to the single verse in Revelation: a Christian of Pergamum, remembered as a faithful witness, who died for that witness in a city that the seer of Patmos regarded as a stronghold of hostile power.
