Biography

Short Description

Saint Antipas, also known as Antipas of Pergamum (or Pergamon), was a Christian bishop and martyr of the first century, commemorated in both Eastern and Western Christian traditions. He is named in the New Testament in the Book of Revelation (2:13), where the risen Christ addresses the church at Pergamum and praises the community for remaining faithful “even in the days of Antipas, my faithful witness, who was put to death among you, where Satan dwells.” Pergamum, in the Roman province of Asia (today Bergama in western Turkey), was a major civic and religious centre, seat of the imperial cult and of a famous altar of Zeus; early Christian readers often identified that pagan-imperial complex with the “throne of Satan” in the same verse. Apart from this brief but important notice, almost nothing about Antipas can be established from contemporary historical sources.

Later Greek hagiographical acts, of uncertain and relatively late date, present him as a disciple of the Apostle John, who is said to have consecrated him bishop of Pergamum. According to those accounts, during a persecution of Christians—commonly placed in the reign of the emperor Domitian in the late first century—Antipas refused to sacrifice to the pagan gods. He was then condemned and enclosed in a hollow bronze bull that was heated over a fire until he died, a form of execution recalling the brazen bull associated in classical literature with the tyrant Phalaris. Historians treat these acts as pious legend rather than as a reliable contemporary record, while agreeing that a Christian named Antipas was martyred at Pergamum in the first century, as the Apocalypse attests. His year and place of birth are unrecorded; whether he was married or had children is likewise unattested.

Veneration of Antipas as a hieromartyr (a bishop who died for the faith) became established in the Christian East and was received in the West. His feast is kept on 11 April in the Roman Martyrology and in the calendars of the Eastern Orthodox and Byzantine Catholic churches. Relics and a shrine at Pergamum were reported in later centuries, and his cult spread especially in the Orthodox world. In popular devotion he came to be invoked against toothache and as a patron of dentists, a patronage that appears to have arisen from the association of his fiery martyrdom with intense pain in the head and teeth, and from reports of healings at his tomb or through his intercession. Churches dedicated to him exist in various Orthodox countries.

Because the New Testament reference is so brief and the later acts are legendary, many particulars of his life remain unknown. He was not a pope or a patriarch, but a local bishop of an important Asian see. His historical significance rests on being named in Revelation as a “faithful witness” whose death did not cause the Pergamene church to deny the name of Christ, and on the subsequent liturgical memory that made him one of the early bishop-martyrs of Asia Minor.
