Biography

Short Description

Antipater of Bostra was a Greek-speaking Christian bishop and theologian of the mid-fifth century who occupied the metropolitan see of Bostra in the Roman province of Arabia. Bostra, today Bosra in southern Syria, had been the capital of Arabia Petraea and remained the ecclesiastical metropolis of the province, with numerous suffragan bishoprics under the broader authority of the Patriarchate of Antioch. Almost nothing can be established about Antipater’s birth, family, education, or the dates of his consecration and death. He is known to have been active around the middle of the fifth century and is commonly described as flourishing about 460. Episcopal lists indicate that Constantine of Bostra attended the Council of Chalcedon in 451, so Antipater is generally placed as his successor in the years that followed.

In the generation after Chalcedon, the churches of the East continued to wrestle with christological definition and with the still-contested heritage of Origen of Alexandria. Antipater’s major contribution to these debates was a substantial refutation of the Apology for Origen that Pamphilus of Caesarea and Eusebius of Caesarea had written in the early fourth century. The refutation attacked characteristic Origenist positions, among them the pre-existence of souls, the spiritualized interpretation of the resurrection, and what Antipater regarded as uncontrolled allegory in the reading of Scripture. The full work is lost. Fragments were excerpted for the proceedings of the Second Council of Constantinople in 553, at which Origenist doctrines were condemned, and additional quotations were preserved by John of Damascus in the Sacra Parallela and by later Byzantine compilers of catenae.

Photius of Constantinople, writing in the ninth century, included an account of Antipater’s anti-Origenist treatise in his Bibliotheca. He characterized the work as long and at times verbose, yet he credited Antipater with a vigorous style and a firm grasp of the issues. A few homilies circulating under Antipater’s name, notably a sermon on the nativity of John the Baptist, have been printed among the Greek patristic texts; modern scholarship treats some of these attributions with caution. Together the fragments and notices show a bishop engaged in the doctrinal policing typical of the Antiochene sphere in the later fifth century, standing against both residual Origenism and the extremes of the christological parties.

Beyond these literary remains, the biographical dossier is extremely thin. No contemporary life, no securely identified inscription, and no undisputed ancient liturgical feast preserve further personal details. Antipater is not recorded as a patriarch or as bishop of Rome, and there is no reliable evidence concerning marriage, children, or membership in a monastic order. His reputation in later centuries rested on the utility of his anti-Origenist excerpts for conciliar and compilatory purposes rather than on a continuous cult or a large surviving oeuvre. He remains a relatively obscure but not insignificant witness to the theological climate of fifth-century Arabia and to the long afterlife of the Origenist controversy in the Greek Church.
