Biography

Short Description

Antoine de Krasny Kholm, known in the Russian tradition as Anthony of Krasnokholmsk, was a fifteenth-century monk of the Russian Orthodox Church and the founder of the Antoniev Krasnokholmsky Monastery, located near the later town of Krasny Kholm in the Tver region of Russia. Virtually no contemporary documents survive that would allow a historian to reconstruct his early life, place of birth, or family background. He belongs to the numerous group of late-medieval Russian monastic founders whose memory is preserved chiefly through the houses they established and through brief later notices rather than through a full medieval vita.

Monastic tradition relates that Anthony had previously been a monk at the Kirillo-Belozersky Monastery, a major centre of northern Russian monasticism associated with St. Cyril of Beloozero. Seeking a more eremitical life, he is said to have arrived in the traditional year 1461 at a wooded hill overlooking the Mologa River. On that site, subsequently called Krasny Kholm, he constructed a wooden church in honour of Saint Nicholas of Myra and gathered a small brotherhood. The new community received material support from local landowners and gradually developed into a cenobitic monastery of regional significance, later endowed with stone churches and landed estates.

Anthony acted as the first hegumen of the house. No autograph writings or detailed contemporary accounts of his rule have been preserved, and the earliest surviving documentary references to the monastery itself date from the following century. Later monastic sources assign his death to 1481 and state that he was buried within the monastery. His relics became an object of local veneration. In the Russian Orthodox tradition he is numbered among the locally venerated saints of the Tver land and is sometimes commemorated together with the Synaxis of the Saints of Tver. Formal details of any synodal glorification are not clearly recorded in readily accessible historical literature.

The monastery continued to grow after its founder’s death, reaching a period of prosperity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries before suffering during the Time of Troubles. It was closed by the Soviet authorities in the twentieth century, and a large part of its architectural ensemble was demolished or left to decay. Some restoration has occurred in the post-Soviet era. Given the extreme scarcity of primary sources, any biographical reconstruction of Antoine de Krasny Kholm must remain provisional and heavily dependent on later hagiographical and monastic tradition.
