Biography

Short Description

Anton Durcovici was a Romanian Latin-rite Catholic bishop of Austrian birth who died as a martyr of the Communist persecution of the Church in Romania in the mid-twentieth century. He was born on 17 May 1888 at Bad Deutsch-Altenburg in Lower Austria, then part of Austria-Hungary. After the death of his father, his mother settled with her children in Iași in the Kingdom of Romania in the mid-1890s, and the boy grew up in the Latin Catholic community of Moldavia. He studied at the diocesan seminary of Saint Joseph in Iași and was then sent to Rome, where he trained at the Pontifical Urban College of Propaganda Fide and completed higher studies in philosophy and theology. He was ordained to the priesthood in Rome on 24 September 1910 and returned to pastoral and academic work in Romania rather than remaining in a religious order; he belonged to the secular (diocesan) clergy.

In the following decades Durcovici became one of the principal formators of the Latin clergy in Moldavia. He taught in the Iași seminary, later serving as its rector, and was known as a professor of theology and canon law as well as a preacher and organizer of catechesis and Catholic Action. He also undertook pastoral duties connected with the Church in Bucharest and with the apostolic nunciature during the interwar years, when the Romanian state regulated Catholic life under the Concordat with the Holy See. Through the upheavals of the Second World War he remained in ministry among a religious minority that included Romanian-, Hungarian-, German-, and Polish-speaking Latin Catholics. After the death of Bishop Mihai Robu of Iași in 1944 the see stood vacant while the Soviet-backed Communist movement tightened its hold on the country.

Pope Pius XII appointed Durcovici Bishop of Iași on 30 October 1947. He was consecrated on 5 April 1948 in Saint Joseph’s Cathedral in Bucharest by Archbishop Gerald Patrick O’Hara, the apostolic nuncio, at a moment when the new regime was already preparing to break the Concordat, expel the nuncio, and bring all churches under state control. As bishop he tried to keep seminary formation and diocesan government intact and to prevent the clergy from being drawn into government-sponsored associations of so-called democratic priests. He refused to accept a national church detached from Rome or to yield the Holy See’s rights over episcopal appointments. Those refusals, together with his defense of Catholic schools and associations, made him a target of the Securitate as the campaign against both the Latin and the Romanian Greek Catholic Churches intensified in 1948–1949.

The authorities arrested Bishop Durcovici on 26 June 1949. He was held in successive prisons, including Jilava, interrogated, and mistreated in an effort to obtain accusations against the Vatican and fellow churchmen. In 1951 he was transferred to the secret political prison at Sighetu Marmației in northern Romania, where leading prelates and politicians were confined in isolation. Deprived of adequate food, heat, and medical care, he died there on 10 December 1951; later testimony from the prison describes death from starvation and exposure. The regime disposed of his body in an unmarked mass grave at Sighetu Marmației, and his remains have never been identified.

After the collapse of Communist rule the Diocese of Iași promoted his cause as that of a martyr who had died in hatred of the faith. He was beatified on 17 May 2014 in Iași, on the anniversary of his birth, in a public ceremony at which Cardinal Angelo Amato, prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided in the name of Pope Francis. The Catholic Church observes his memorial on 10 December, the date of his death. He has not been canonized. His memory is especially cultivated in the Latin Catholic community of Moldavia as that of a seminary rector, diocesan bishop, and victim of the Romanian prison system of the early 1950s.
