Biography
Anton Zogaj was an Albanian Roman Catholic diocesan priest who died as a martyr under the communist regime of Enver Hoxha. He was born on 26 July 1908 in the village of Blinisht in the Lezhë district of northern Albania. At the time of his birth that region still belonged to the Ottoman Empire; Albania declared independence a few years later, in 1912. He received his priestly formation at the Pontifical Albanian Seminary in Shkodër, the principal Catholic educational centre in the country, and was ordained to the priesthood on 15 March 1936. Thereafter he served in pastoral ministry within the Archdiocese of Durrës.
He was later appointed secretary to Archbishop Vinçenc Prennushi of Durrës, a Franciscan prelate who would himself die as a result of imprisonment and maltreatment by the same authorities. After the Second World War the new communist government regarded the Catholic clergy, with their loyalty to the Holy See, as a political threat. Zogaj continued his work beside the archbishop until he was arrested by the Sigurimi, the state security police. He was interrogated, tortured, and condemned in a political trial on charges of anti-state activity and collaboration with the Vatican.
On 31 December 1948 he was executed by firing squad in Durrës. He was forty years old. As with many clergy killed in those years, the precise place of his burial is not recorded in publicly available sources; bodies were often disposed of in unmarked graves.
On 5 November 2016 Anton Zogaj was beatified in Shkodër together with thirty-seven other Albanian Catholics—bishops, priests, religious, and lay faithful—who had died under the same persecution. Cardinal Angelo Amato, then prefect of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, presided in the name of Pope Francis. The group is venerated as the Blessed Martyrs of Albania, and their collective liturgical memorial is observed on 5 November. Zogaj’s life is remembered as a witness of priestly fidelity during one of the most systematically atheistic campaigns against the Church in twentieth-century Europe.
