Biography

Short Description

Antoni Leszczewicz was born on 30 September 1890 in Abramiki, in the Latgale region of what is today Latvia, then within the Russian Empire. He belonged to a Polish Catholic family and received his theological education in Saint Petersburg, a principal center for the training of Latin-rite clergy who would serve Catholics scattered across the empire. He was ordained a priest in 1914 for the Archdiocese of Mohilev, whose territory stretched over immense distances and included many communities that had little regular access to the sacraments.

After ordination he undertook parish work in the eastern borderlands. The revolutions of 1917 and the establishment of Soviet power brought systematic hostility toward the Catholic Church. Clergy were monitored, imprisoned, or forced into exile, and public religious life was severely restricted. Leszczewicz persevered in ministry through these decades of pressure, serving the faithful as conditions permitted in a climate of suspicion and scarcity.

In 1938, already a middle-aged diocesan priest, he entered the Congregation of Marian Fathers of the Immaculate Conception. The Marians, founded in Poland in the seventeenth century and later restored, combined devotion to the Immaculate Conception with pastoral and educational work. The following year he was assigned to Rosica in the Vitebsk region of present-day Belarus, a locality that had long lacked resident Catholic priests because of Soviet anti-religious policy. With other members of his congregation, including the younger Marian Jerzy Kaszyra, he set about rebuilding parish structures, administering the sacraments, and offering catechesis to people who had lived for years without organized Church life. This work continued after 1941, when German forces occupied Belarus.

In February 1943 the German occupation authorities launched a pacification operation in the Rosica area against villages accused of supporting partisans. The civilian population was assembled and subjected to collective punishment. Father Leszczewicz declined to abandon those in his care. He remained to hear confessions and to celebrate the Eucharist. On 17 February 1943 he and Father Kaszyra were shut with a large group of civilians into a barn that was then set on fire. He died in the flames. The destruction of Rosica formed part of a wider pattern of wartime atrocities in occupied Belarus.

On 13 June 1999, in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified Antoni Leszczewicz among the 108 Martyrs of World War II, a group of Polish clergy, religious, and laity killed during the German occupation. The group is commemorated on 12 June. Leszczewicz has not been canonized. His memory is preserved in the Marian congregation and among Catholics in Poland and Belarus as that of a priest who bound his fate to his people and accepted death rather than desert them.
