Biography

Short Description

Antoni Rewera was a Polish Roman Catholic diocesan priest of the Diocese of Sandomierz, later venerated as a blessed martyr of the Catholic Church. He was born on 6 January 1869 in the village of Samborzec in the Sandomierz region, then lying in Congress Poland under the Russian Empire. Formed in the local Catholic milieu of that rural district, he entered the diocesan seminary at Sandomierz, the historic episcopal city on the Vistula, and completed the philosophical and theological course required for the Latin-rite priesthood. He was ordained for the Diocese of Sandomierz in the 1890s and spent the whole of his ministry in that diocese, through the last years of the partitions, the First World War, and the restored Polish state.

In the decades before and after Polish independence in 1918 he combined parish work with the education of clergy. He taught at the Sandomierz seminary and was named a canon of the Sandomierz cathedral chapter, placing him among the senior diocesan clergy. Polish ecclesiastical notices, which remain fuller than the sparse English-language record, present him as a priest of ordinary pastoral and educational duty rather than as a national public figure. His generation of Sandomierz clergy lived through Russification, wartime disruption, and the rebuilding of church institutions in the Second Polish Republic; Rewera belonged to that body of secular priests who staffed parishes, the seminary, and the cathedral.

After the German invasion of Poland in September 1939, the Diocese of Sandomierz fell under the occupation regime of the General Government. Nazi policy toward the Polish Catholic clergy was one of systematic repression, including mass arrests aimed at weakening Polish religious and national leadership. In 1942 Rewera, by then an elderly cathedral canon, was arrested by the German security police, held in local prisons, and deported into the concentration-camp system. He was sent to Dachau in Bavaria, which the SS used as a principal camp for imprisoned clergy, especially Poles. Large numbers of Polish priests died there from starvation, disease, forced labour, and brutality. Rewera died at Dachau on 1 October 1942. No individual grave is recorded; camp victims were generally cremated.

After 1945, Polish dioceses gathered documentation on priests who had perished under the occupation. Rewera’s cause was included in the collective process of the Martyrs of the Second World War, a group of 108 Polish victims of Nazi persecution. On 13 June 1999, in Warsaw, Pope John Paul II beatified the 108, among them Antoni Rewera. The group is commemorated liturgically on 12 June. Rewera has not been canonized. He is venerated as Blessed Antoni Rewera, a diocesan priest-martyr of Sandomierz, and remains little known outside Polish Catholic historiography, where he is remembered among the clergy who died at Dachau.
